Global hunger levels remain alarmingly high. At least 36 million people in 39 countries are on the brink of famine. The world produces more than enough food to feed the global population, but up to 10 percent of the people around the globe still go hungry. Between 691 and 783 million people faced hunger in 2022, according to the “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World Report 2023”.
In 2023, around 282 million people were acutely food insecure and in need of urgent assistance across 59 countries and territories around the world, says the Global Network against Food Crises, an international alliance working to address the root causes of extreme hunger, in its “Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC 2024)”. This is an increase of 24 million people worldwide from the previous year.
Last year, more than 45 percent of the people requiring food aid lived in just six countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Sudan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and Yemen. Among the ten countries worst affected by food crises were Syria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Myanmar.
In 2023, more than 705,000 people were at catastrophic levels of food insecurity and at risk of starvation. The current situation in the Gaza Strip accounts for 80 percent of those facing imminent famine, along with South Sudan, Burkina Faso, Somalia and Mali. In 2024, the situation will be much worse. About 1.1 million people in Gaza and 79,000 people in South Sudan are projected to be in catastrophe by July 2024, bringing the total number of people estimated to be in this extreme phase to nearly 1.3 million.
Over 36 million people were in emergency levels of food insecurity in 39 countries, with more than half of those located in just four countries – Sudan, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan.
Many of these crises belong to the forgotten crises or are underfunded emergencies. You can donate for people threatened by famines, hunger and malnutrition. DONARE has selected seven organizations focusing on hunger relief: the World Food Programme, Action Against Hunger, Concern Worldwide, CARITAS Internationalis, ACTED, COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale, and Solidarités International.
