The number of forcibly displaced people continues to rise. As of October 2024, more than 123 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events that seriously disrupted public order. At the end of 2023, more than 117 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide. Some 68 million were uprooted from their homes by conflict and remain displaced within their own countries as internally displaced persons (IDPs). Another 38 million were refugees, while tens of millions more were asylum-seekers, returnees or stateless people.
Internally displaced persons are those who have fled violence, human-made or natural disasters, but have not crossed an internationally recognized border and stay within their own country. Conflict and violence have pushed the overall number of IDPs around the world to a record high of 75.9 million at the end of 2023. Of this total, 7.7 million people were displaced as a result of disasters, in addition to the 68.3 million people displaced as a result of conflict and violence.
Refugees are those who have crossed an international border. The vast majority of refugees - 69 percent - are hosted by countries neighboring their countries of origin, with 75 percent living in low- and middle-income countries. While children make up 30 percent of the world's population, they represent 40 percent of all forcibly displaced people.
