Sponsor a Child

Do you want to make a direct connection with a country and a young person? Individual charities facilitate child sponsorship around the world. Child sponsorships are programs that match children in need and suffering with sponsors around the world. However, child sponsorships do not usually count as emergency aid and are not offered so much for countries with an acute emergency situation, but are more a form of cooperation for sustainable development.

When you sponsor a child, the charity organization usually does not forward your donation directly to the child you have sponsored, but your monthly contribution benefits the child as well as the family and the environment. For the children this can be education, sufficient nutrition, access to medical care or access to safe drinking water. Sponsoring a child costs from 1 Dollar or 1 Euro per day.

Please note: Child sponsorships are not without controversy. There are supporters and opponents of this type of aid. Sponsorships, for example, are counted as earmarked donations and cause more administrative work for aid organizations than contributions that are not earmarked. In addition, you bind yourself to an aid organization for a certain period of time and have to expect contributions starting at 350 dollars per year. On the other hand, child sponsorships strengthen the bond between donor, child and community in the target country and make the aid concrete.

DONARE has selected four reputable organizations that generally allow sponsorships.

Plan International Child Sponsorship

A sponsorship through Plan International provides children with schooling and professional training, as well as clothing, food, medical care and education. Not only the sponsored child is supported, but also the family and the surrounding area, so that the living conditions there should improve in the long term.

Save the Children Child Sponsorship

When you sponsor a child, the organization does not give your donation directly to the child you have sponsored. Rather, Save the Children combines your monthly contribution with the support of other sponsors to promote aid projects in the respective community.

Save the Children UK does not currently offer the possibility to apply for child sponsorship.

WorldVision Child Sponsorship

The organization believes that lasting improvements in the lives of children in need are only possible if their environment is changed. The help of a World Vision sponsorship is therefore not limited to the sponsored child, but his or her family and the child's community are also involved in the support.
