The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was the most neglected displacement crisis in the world in 2021, according to a report by the non-governmental organization Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). The analysis, released June 1, lists the top ten least noticed displacement crises in the world in 2021. This year, the full list includes (1) Democratic Republic of Congo, (2) Burkina Faso, (3) Cameroon, (4) South Sudan, (5) Chad, (6) Mali, (7) Sudan, (8) Nigeria, (9) Burundi, and (10) Ethiopia. For the first time, the listing of crises comprises only countries on the African continent.
The goal of the annual NRC report is to draw attention to the plight of people who receive no or inadequate aid, whose suffering rarely makes international headlines, and who are never the focus of international diplomatic efforts. The annual list of neglected displacement crises is based on three criteria: lack of funding, lack of media attention, and lack of international political and diplomatic initiatives.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organization that helps people who are forced to flee their homes. The organization's headquarters are located in Oslo, Norway. The organization is currently one of the largest NGOs in the world assisting refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
