The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian organization dedicated to protecting and assisting victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and emergency. It was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1863 and is one of the best-known and oldest humanitarian organizations in the world. The work of the ICRC is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949, their additional protocols, its statutes - and those of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The globally active humanitarian organization has its headquarters in Geneva.
Together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and 192 national societies, the ICRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The organization works independently and neutrally and strives to alleviate humanitarian suffering by providing emergency relief and medical assistance, visiting prisoners of war, reuniting families, informing parties to conflict about international humanitarian law and advocating for compliance with international humanitarian law. The International Committee of the Red Cross often works closely with governments, international organizations and other humanitarian organizations to fulfill its mission.
