The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a United Nations agency tasked with supporting and protecting refugees, displaced persons and stateless people. The short name of the organization is the UN Refugee Agency. The UNHCR was founded on December 14, 1950, by the General Assembly of the United Nations to provide assistance to refugees from the Second World War. The UNHCR began its work on January 1, 1951. Every year, the UN Refugee Agency helps millions of refugees and displaced persons worldwide. UNHCR is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has offices in 134 countries.
