The German aid organization Welthungerhilfe warns that the number of people suffering from hunger is rising worldwide, and at the same time food and transport prices are exploding, so that the hunger crises are continuing to spread globally. According to the non-governmental organization (NGO), the situation has become particularly severe in the Horn of Africa, where 17 million people currently do not have enough food to eat. Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya are experiencing the worst drought in 40 years.
At the presentation of its annual report on July 12, Welthungerhilfe pointed to the difficult conditions of its project work. According to a recent UN report, up to 828 million people are chronically malnourished and at risk of hunger. Key hunger drivers include conflict and war, as well as the effects of climate change and the corona pandemic. The war against Ukraine is exacerbating the already dramatic food situation. In many crisis countries, people are also struggling with the effects of various overlapping crises.
Welthungerhilfe has set itself the goal of responding to the dramatic food situation and supporting even more people in need in project countries. The focus is particularly on crisis countries such as South Sudan, Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2021, Welthungerhilfe had 310 million euros at its disposal - of which donations totaled 77.5 million euros - to overcome hunger and poverty. South Sudan, Sudan and Syria received the highest project funding in 2021.
Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organizations in Germany; the NGO was founded on Dec. 14, 1962, and celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
