The United Nations (UN) has dramatically raised its humanitarian appeal Tuesday to help millions of people in Pakistan, where erratic rains and a combination of riverine, urban and flash floods have unleashed an unprecedented climate-related disaster since June 2022. The revised international funding appeal, jointly launched with the Pakistani government, is seeking $816 million for the coming months in the wake of the immensity of the calamity and growing needs.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), around 33 million people have been affected by the heavy rains and floods, including at least 7.9 million people who have been displaced, of whom some 598,000 are living in relief camps. Nearly 800,000 refugees are estimated to be hosted in more than 40 calamity-notified districts. OCHA says some 20.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance following the catastrophic flooding.
According to the Pakistani authorities, between 14 June and 28 September more than 1,600 people were killed and over 12,800 people were injured as a result of the heavy rains and floods. One-third of all recorded deaths and injuries are children. Nearly half of all deaths and 66 per cent of all injuries were recorded in Sindh province.
Pakistani officials say more than two million houses have been affected by the disaster in Pakistan, with more than 767,000 houses destroyed and nearly 1.3 million houses damaged. Eighty-nine per cent of the damage to houses are in Sindh. UN officials warn of growing hunger in Pakistan, saying the deluge inundated more than 3.6 million hectares of farmland and killed more than 1.1 million livestock.
