Sudan: Ceasefire talks begin in Geneva, but warring parties fail to show up

Ceasefire talks seeking to end Sudan's 16-month civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in Geneva on Wednesday, but neither warring side entered the negotiating room. The talks, which also aim to address the world's largest humanitarian crisis, took place without the presence of the rival military factions.

Ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia takes effect

A ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia came into force early Tuesday local time, ending five days of fighting along their disputed border that forced hundreds of thousands to flee. The agreement was reached after urgent talks mediated by Malaysia under the umbrella of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and supported by the United States and China.

Sudan: UN renews appeal for ceasefire as fighting spreads

The United Nations on Tuesday renewed its appeal for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, with officials warning that civilians are paying a heavy price for the fighting as outside parties fuel the conflict by supplying weapons. They say the unrelenting violence in Sudan, which has raged for more than 18 months, is poised to intensify, worsening already alarming levels of human rights violations, hunger and displacement.

Battles rage in Khartoum as Sudan's warring rivals ignore humanitarian cease-fire

Battles raged in the streets of Khartoum for a fifth day Wednesday after the country's two warring factions failed to honor a cease-fire. Loud explosions and gunfire were heard in the Sudanese capital, and witnesses reported heavy fighting between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the center of the city.

UN Security Council calls for cease-fire in Sudan during Ramadan

The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution Friday calling for a Ramadan cease-fire in Sudan, where the UN Secretary-General warned this week that the humanitarian crisis has reached "colossal proportions." The resolution also urged the warring parties to seek a sustainable resolution to the war in Sudan through dialogue and to remove any obstructions to the distribution of humanitarian aid.

Lebanon crisis: Casualties rise and destruction continues despite ceasefire

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the humanitarian situation in Lebanon remains fragile and volatile despite the ceasefire being extended until mid-May. Hostilities are continuing to cause civilian casualties. On Thursday, Lebanese authorities reported multiple airstrikes and military activity across towns in southern Lebanon, resulting in at least nine deaths and 13 injuries.

Warring parties in Yemen commit to ceasefire, inclusive political process

The United Nations says warring parties in Yemen have agreed on a significant step to end the devastating civil war, following a series of meetings in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Muscat, Oman mediated by the UN. In a statement Saturday, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, welcomed the parties’ commitment to a set of measures, which includes implementing a nationwide ceasefire, improving living conditions in Yemen, and the resumption of an inclusive political process under UN auspices.

UNRWA: Gaza cease-fire matter of life and death for millions

The head of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said Monday that civilians in the Gaza Strip are suffering collective punishment and forced displacement as Israels continues its bombing from air, land and sea, killing hundreds of civilians every day. Today, UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing of civilians in Gaza and expressed his dismay by reports that two-thirds of those who have been killed are women and children.

DR Congo: While situation in Ituri deteriorates, fragile cease-fire in North-Kivu holds

The United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region has told the UN Security Council Wednesday that the fragile ceasefire between the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and the Mouvement du 23 mars (M23) rebels in North Kivu Province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, DR Congo) seems to be holding. Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the security situation in neighboring Ituri Province remains extremely concerning due to ongoing attacks against civilians.

Ceasefire agreed in Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict

Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray Peoples' Liberation Front (TPLF) have announced a ceasefire for the conflict in northern Ethiopia after ten days of peace talks in South Africa. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who mediated the talks led by the African Union (AU), broke the news Wednesday in the South African capital of Pretoria. A joint statement said the warring parties “have agreed to silence the guns and end the two years of conflict in northern Ethiopia.”

Gaza: NGOs call for immediate ceasefire, massive increase in aid to avoid famine

More than a dozen humanitarian organizations have called Wednesday for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and a massive increase in humanitarian assistance to avoid famine in the war-torn Gaza Strip. The United Nations, independent rights experts, human rights groups and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that Israel is using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare in Gaza.

UN Commission of Inquiry: Syria desperately needs a ceasefire

Syria is experiencing a wave of violence not seen since 2020, the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria warned in a report released Monday. Across multiple fronts, parties to the conflict have attacked civilians and infrastructure in ways that likely amount to war crimes, while an unprecedented humanitarian crisis is plunging Syrians into deepening despair, the Commission said.

East African leaders urge ceasefire in eastern DR Congo

East African head of states have renewed their call for an immediate ceasefire by all parties in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, DR Congo). The call came at an extra-ordinary summit in Burundi’s capital Bujumbura on Saturday. The leaders of the East African Community (EAC) also demanded the withdrawal of all foreign armed troops.

Gaza: One million people receive food parcels as aid agencies race to push back hunger

Food is slowly returning to the Gaza Strip amid "apocalyptic scenes", but UN humanitarian officials said on Tuesday that supplies are still desperately inadequate. They issued fresh calls for wider access and more border crossings to be opened, as well as continued financial support. Since the resumption of general food distributions on October 13, nearly half of Gaza's population has received food parcels.

Iran war leaves millions of refugees and displaced people devastated

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) warned on Monday that millions of Iranian civilians and Afghan refugees living in Iran have been severely affected by the Iran war, which has forced millions to flee their homes across the country. Jan Egeland, NRC Secretary General, said during a visit to the country that essential civilian infrastructure has been damaged, exacerbating deep humanitarian needs.

Israel blocks all humanitarian aid into Gaza

In a gross violation of international humanitarian law, Israel has blocked the entry of aid trucks into the Gaza Strip since Sunday. The total blockade came amid stalled cessation of hostilities talks. The Red Cross Movement warns that the closure of all crossings for aid into Gaza poses a grave risk to the millions of people who have been struggling to survive for sixteen months.

Colombia: ELN announces Christmas truce

The National Liberation Army (ELN), the largest remaining non-state armed group (NSAG) in Colombia, has announced a unilateral ceasefire for the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays as a "gesture of peace". In an official statement on Sunday, the ELN said the ceasefire would begin at midnight on December 23 and end at midnight on January 3.

Palestine Crisis

The overall humanitarian situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is marked by a protracted political crisis, characterized by 58 years of Israeli military occupation. In October 2023, the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip deteriorated drastically following the start of a war by the Israeli military due to atrocities committed by Palestinian armed groups. For more than two years, an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe is raging in Gaza, where civilians are dying from violence, lack of medical treatment, famine, disease, starvation, dehydration, and hypothermia. On October 10, 2025, a ceasefire between Israel and the armed group Hamas went into effect.
