Gaza: UN Security Council demands an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday adopted a resolution demanding ā€œan immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefireā€ in the Gaza Strip, as well as ā€œthe immediate and unconditional release of all hostagesā€. Resolution 2728 (2024), which also calls for "the urgent need to expand the flow" of aid into Gaza, passed by a vote of 14 in favor to none against, with the United States abstaining.

UN Security Council adopts resolution urging end to Myanmar violence

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has passed a landmark resolution on Myanmar Wednesday, demanding the military government immediately end violence in the Southeast Asian nation and release all arbitrarily detained prisoners, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. The resolution was adopted with 12 votes in favor and three abstentions, from China, India, and the Russian Federation.

UN Security Council authorizes international force to support Haiti’s police

The United Nations Security Council has voted Monday to authorize an international force to support Haiti’s police amid a gang-driven security crisis. Acting under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, 13 of the 15 council members voted for the non-UN Multinational Security Support Mission. China and Russia abstained. Haiti has repeated called for help in supporting its national police.

The UN Security Council has voted Tuesday on the extension of the mandate allowing aid to flow from Turkey to 4.1 million Syrians living in opposition-held areas of the country’s northwest. Life-saving assistance is at risk after the Council failed to adopt either of two competing resolutions to extend cross-border aid delivery.

UN Security Council calls for 'humanitarian pauses' in Gaza as carnage continues

The United Nations Security Council overcame weeks of inaction and bickering Wednesday to issue a call for "extended humanitarian pauses" in the Gaza Strip, especially for the protection of children, only to have the Israeli government immediately reject the measure. Gaza: 500,000 face catastrophic hunger, UN Security Council passes resolution

The entire population in the Gaza Strip faces an imminent risk of famine, with more than half a million people already in catastrophic conditions, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) warns. UN agency chiefs urge Security Council to preserve cross-border aid to north-west Syria

United Nations agency chiefs have urged the UN Security Council to renew a resolution guaranteeing cross-border aid access to north-west Syria, warning that without it, millions of people, especially those displaced for years and multiple times, will not have access to food and shelter. The appeal came in a written statement Monday signed by the heads of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, International Organization for Migration, UN Children's Fund, World Food Programme, World Health Organization, UN Refugee Agency, and UN Population Fund.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted a resolution that will protect humanitarian assistance from unintended negative impacts across all  UN sanctions regimes. Fourteen council members voted Friday in favor of UNSC Resolution 2664 and only one, India, abstained on the text initiated by the United States and Ireland.

Syria: UN Security Council renews cross-border aid operations into north-west

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously decided Monday to extend the use of the Bab al-Hawa border crossing for the delivery of aid into north-west Syria for six months, as Russia did not veto the resolution. Humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) expressed relieve following the decision, which provides a lifeline to millions of Syrians residing in areas outside government control during winter.

Gaza: US vetoes UN Security Council resolution demanding end to war

As Israel's war on Gaza continues, the United States on Wednesday vetoed the latest resolution on the Gaza Strip in the United Nations Security Council, which demanded an immediate, unconditional and lasting ceasefire as well as full humanitarian access for civilians. The most recent veto comes in the face of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe raging for more than a year in the territory, where people continue to die from violence, disease and starvation, with the threat of famine looming.

DR Congo: UN Security Council demands M23 withdraw from captured towns

The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution demanding that the M23 armed rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) immediately cease hostilities and withdraw from territories it has seized. The Council also threatened sanctions against those who prolong the conflict, which has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Sudan war: UN Security Council demands end to siege of El Fasher

Amid the alarming humanitarian situation in Sudan, the UN Security Council on Thursday demanded that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) end their siege of the North Darfur capital, El Fasher, as they move to take the last remaining town in the Western Darfur region from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Meanwhile, the humanitarian emergency remains severely underfunded, despite the United States pledging US$315 million in additional funding to Sudan on Friday.

UN chief: Dysfunctional Security Council jeopardizes world peace

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned Wednesday that the world has entered an "age of chaos" that is causing widespread suffering and thwarting progress - and must be reversed. Afghanistan: Security Council condemns Taliban ban on women working for UN

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution Thursday condemning the decision of the Taliban to ban Afghan women from working for the United Nations in Afghanistan, saying that it undermines human rights and humanitarian principles. The resolution also demands that Afghanistan's de facto leaders swiftly reverse their restrictions on women's access to education and work.

Gaza: Despite UN Security Council resolution, Israel hinders humanitarian aid from reaching civilians

As the volume of aid reaching the Gaza Strip remains woefully inadequate, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) called Friday on the Israeli authorities, other parties to the conflict and those with influence over them to safeguard an environment for safe and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid. According to the UN agency, the entire population of Gaza of 2.2 million people is now almost exclusively dependent on humanitarian assistance, including food.

UN Human Rights Council urges arms embargo on Israel

The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) on Friday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution calling for Israel to be held accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Amid the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the resolution also urges all states ā€œto cease the sale, transfer and diversion of arms, munitions and other military equipment to Israel.ā€

Food security in Burkina Faso deteriorating amid continued conflict

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has called for international attention to the humanitarian crisis in Burkina Faso, where almost 5 million people currently require humanitarian assistance. In a statement Thursday, the non-governmental organization (NGO) said that over 800,000 women, men, and children live in 26 cities under blockade with limited or no access to basic necessities which has led to an unprecedented food crisis.
