WMO warns early action needed as El Niño begins

El Niño conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific for the first time in seven years, setting the stage for a likely surge in global temperatures and disruptive weather and climate patterns this year and in 2024. The naturally occurring major climate phenomenon may aggravate current humanitarian crises around the world and may lead to new emergencies related to the ongoing climate crisis.

WMO: Climate crisis causes global health crisis

Climate change threatens to reverse decades of progress toward better health and well-being, particularly in the most vulnerable communities, according to a new report by the UN weather agency. In its annual State of Climate Services report, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Thursday warned that the climate crisis was generating a global health crisis and said that many ill effects of climate change could be tempered by adaptation and prevention measures.

WMO: Africa faces disproportionate burden from climate change

Africa is bearing an increasingly heavy burden of climate change and disproportionately high costs of essential climate adaptation measures, according to a new World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report released on Monday. The report also warns that the continent faces disproportionate risks from climate change-related extreme weather events and patterns, causing massive humanitarian crises.

WMO warns of record climate imbalance as planetary warming accelerates

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued one of its most urgent warnings to date, stating that the Earth’s climate system is more imbalanced now than at any other time in the history of modern observation. WMO's latest State of the Global Climate report, released on Monday, paints a stark picture of a planet that is accumulating heat at an unprecedented rate due to record levels of greenhouse gases, resulting in increasingly severe consequences.

WMO: El Niño confirmed, extreme weather events set to intensify

The United Nations urged all countries on Tuesday to boost their early warning systems after confirming the onset of El Niño, warning that the climate phenomenon will bring above-average temperatures "nearly everywhere" and fuel more extreme weather. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is an 80 percent probability that El Niño conditions will emerge between June and August, with a 90 percent chance thereafter.

Climate crisis: Record heat likely to continue in 2025 after decade of hottest years

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that this year's record-breaking heat is likely to continue in 2025, further accelerating climate change and leading to catastrophic consequences, unless urgent action is taken to curb the "human activities" behind this looming disaster.  According to the United Nations weather agency, 2024 is set to be the hottest year on record, "capping a decade of unprecedented heat fueled by human activities."

Extreme heat has devastating impact on hundreds of millions worldwide

Soaring temperatures in July had a devastating impact on the well-being of hundreds of millions of people around the world who found the month's extreme heat too much to bear, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The world's two hottest days on record were recorded last month - another indication of the extent to which greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the world's climate.

Climate crisis: Global temperature record streak continues

The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says last month was the warmest April on record - the eleventh month in a row with record global temperatures. Sea surface temperatures have also been at record highs for the past 13 months. Climate crisis: Earth experienced hottest three-month period on record

Earth just experienced its hottest three months on record, according to the European Union-funded Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). At the same time, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports global sea surface temperatures are at unprecedented highs for the third consecutive month and Antarctic sea ice extent remains at a record low for the time of year. The developments come as the climate crisis is already having a devastating impact on people and ecosystems and fueling hunger and conflict in the world's worst crisis hotspots.
