UN rights chief: Warring parties trample human rights at their core

United Nations human rights chief Voker Türk has expressed dismay at the extent to which warring parties in many settings have overstepped the bounds of what is acceptable and legal, "trampling human rights at their core." Moreover, data collected by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) shows that the number of civilian deaths in armed conflicts skyrocketed by 72 percent in 2023 compared to 2022.

Millions of Burkinabe suffer from the rampant insecurity in Burkina Faso

Large parts of Burkina Faso are "terrorized by armed groups" and rampant insecurity is "beyond alarming," the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said this week after a brief visit to the country. During his first trip to the country in his new role, Türk expressed solidarity with the people of Burkina Faso and held high-level talks on the human rights and humanitarian situation in the central Sahel country.

United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk has strongly criticized politicians and some media outlets for scapegoating migrants, refugees, and minorities during election campaigns in countries such as Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. UN rights chief appeals for Israelis and Palestinians to end ‘illogic of escalation’

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has on Friday urged an end to the “illogic of escalation that has been building up, to the detriment of the human rights of Palestinians and Israelis”. Record numbers of Palestinians were killed in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in 2022, which also saw the highest number of Israeli fatalities inside Israel and the West Bank in years.

The United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on journalists to ensure that large-scale human suffering in forgotten crises around the world does not go unreported and that “the demands of the people are amplified so that those with the power, influence and the funds hear it to make a difference.” The comments came on the eve of today’s Human Rights Day, as Mr. Türk launched a yearlong campaign to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75 years ago.

UN human rights chief calls for end to "carnage" in Gaza

The "carnage" in the Gaza Strip has left more than 30,000 dead and must end immediately, United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk told the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday, after nearly five months of continuous Israeli bombardment and mass displacement in the enclave. Meanwhile, Israel, which has the duty and legal obligation to ensure the provision of food and goods to the people of Gaza, continues to fail to provide or even facilitate the delivery of essential supplies for the survival of some 2.3 million people living in Gaza.

Myanmar: Rohingya in Rakhine forced to flee after rebel group seizes township

Tens of thousands of Rohingya have reportedly been displaced in Myanmar's western Rakhine State following escalating fighting between the Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) and the ethnic armed organization Arakan Army (AA). The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on the warring parties to cease fighting, protect civilians, and allow immediate and unimpeded humanitarian access.

Haiti in the grip of total chaos as 53,000 flee capital

With Haiti “in the grip of total chaos”, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says "restoring a degree of public order" to prevent further harm to the population from violence and to ensure access to life-saving humanitarian assistance must be the immediate priority. Myanmar: UN fears repeat of 2017 atrocities against Rohingya

August 25 marks the seventh anniversary of the start of a campaign of mass atrocities by Myanmar's security forces in Rakhine State, which forced more than 700,000 Rohingya to seek refuge in Bangladesh. UN human rights chief Volker Türk on Friday expressed grave concern about the sharply deteriorating situation across Myanmar, particularly in Rakhine, where hundreds of civilians - mostly Rohingya - have reportedly been killed while trying to flee ongoing fighting.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has condemned the widespread human rights violations and abuses committed on a massive scale and with impunity against migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in Libya. Myanmar: Rohingya trapped in crossfire as Rakhine conflict intensifies

UN human rights chief Volker Türk has warned that intensified fighting in Myanmar's Rakhine State between the military and the non-state armed group Arakan Army (AA), as well as tensions between the Rohingya and ethnic Rakhine communities, pose a grave threat to civilians. In a statement on Friday, Türk warned of the grave risk of a repeat of past atrocities, such as the horrific state-backed persecution of the Rohingya in 2017.

International Criminal Court: UN human rights chief condemns US sanctions against judges

United Nations officials have called on Israel and Palestinian armed groups to stop targeting civilians and allow them access to basic services.  UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Tuesday issued an urgent plea to all states with influence to take steps to defuse the “powder keg” situation in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). He stressed that international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law must be respected in all circumstances.

UN rights office: Ethnically motivated attacks surging in Sudan

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned on Friday that Sudanese civilians are in greater danger than ever, as ethnically motivated attacks by warring parties are becoming "increasingly common." The warning comes amid reports of an imminent battle for control of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. The conflict in Sudan has sparked famine, killed tens of thousands of people, and driven millions from their homes.

South Sudan: UN human rights chief condemns escalating hostilities

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, on Friday warned of a further deterioration in the human rights situation in South Sudan, following a sharp increase in hostilities, arbitrary arrests and hate speech in the country since February. The warning comes as South Sudan faces one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, and one of the worst prospects since independence in 2011.
