Humanitarian Organizations Canada

Venezuela crisis: Deepening instability feared following illegal US military intervention

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres told the UN Security Council on Monday that there must be "full respect" for the UN Charter in the face of a US military intervention in Venezuela, as well as the seizure and abduction of President Nicolás Maduro. Guterres also expressed deep concern about the possible intensification of instability in Venezuela, the potential impact on the region, and the dangerous precedent this intervention could set for international relations.

Sudan: Nearly six million displaced face protection crisis as war drags on

The displacement crisis prompted by ongoing conflict in Sudan continues unabated, with nearly six million people forced out of their homes and women and children making up nearly 90 percent of those uprooted, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned on Wednesday. On Thursday, the international humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said that six months into the war in Sudan, people's lives are still in danger from bombings, shelling and shootings, while the country's health system is on the edge of collapse.

Afghanistan Crisis

More than four years after the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan remains in the grip of one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Millions of people in Afghanistan are experiencing misery and hunger in the midst of decades of conflict. The cumulative effects of violent conflict, internal displacement, drought and other natural disasters like earthquakes have dramatically increased humanitarian needs throughout Afghanistan. The surge in the number of Afghans forced or compelled to return to Afghanistan this year has worsened the crisis.

Sudan crisis: Insecurity, displacement drive rising humanitarian needs

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to escalate, with new displacements reported in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, as well as in the Northern and River Nile states. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the situation remains highly volatile, particularly in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, despite a decrease in hostilities since late October. In an update on Monday, OCHA noted that aid organizations still cannot reach civilians inside El Fasher, where a famine has been declared.

Somalia: Conflict, climate crisis, underfunding accelerate hunger crisis

The head of the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has warned Thursday that conflict and climate change are pushing millions of Somalis to the brink of hunger, as the agency is running out of funds to help them. The longest drought on record has killed millions of livestock and decimated crops. It has recently given way to disastrous flash floods in the south of the country.

Millions will die because of brutal funding cuts in humanitarian aid

The United Nations humanitarian chief has warned that millions of people across the world will die because of a critical crisis in global humanitarian funding. The worsening crisis has been triggered by brutal funding cuts to humanitarian aid by the new United States administration, which took office at the end of January 2025 and has eliminated most American humanitarian funding and is dismantling the world's largest government aid agency.

Sahel Crisis

The Sahel region is facing one of the fastest-growing humanitarian crises in the world, with more than 33 million people in need of humanitarian aid in 2025. And at the same time, it is one of the most forgotten.  Armed conflict, deteriorating security, political instability, and widespread poverty are the main drivers of unprecedented humanitarian needs, particularly in the central Sahel region, which includes the countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. This deteriorating humanitarian emergency is further compounded by the impact of the climate crisis and global food insecurity. Rapid climate change is causing natural disasters such as heavy flooding to occur with increasing frequency and severity.

Sahel crisis: Millions face cuts in food aid amid funding crisis

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned on Friday that without urgent funding, life-saving food aid in Africa's Sahel region will come to a halt in April 2025. The warning comes as the lean season, the period between harvests when hunger peaks, is expected to arrive earlier than usual across the region this year. Millions of children, women and men, including refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs), continue to rely on WFP food assistance to survive.

Sudan Crisis

The scale of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Sudan is unprecedented. On April 15, 2023, conflict broke out between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces, causing widespread displacement, hunger, and the world's largest humanitarian crisis. After 27 months of conflict, more than 12 million people are displaced as a result of the ongoing war. The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance stands at 30.4 million people - two-thirds of Sudan's population.

The world is facing an existential threat - the climate crisis. The effects of climate change are already evident and have far-reaching consequences for our environment, ecosystems, societies, and people. But the climate crisis goes beyond mere environmental protection. It is closely linked to the increase and intensification of humanitarian crises affecting many millions of people worldwide and posing immense challenges to the world.

Humanitarian Crisis

A humanitarian crisis (or humanitarian emergency) is an event or series of events that threaten the health, safety, livelihood or well-being of a large group of people. Humanitarian crises can be caused by war, conflict, persecution, disease outbreaks, human-made or natural disasters. In many humanitarian crises and emergencies around the world, multiple causes occur simultaneously. Humanitarian crises have devastating physical, psychological and social consequences for women, men, and children.

Colombia Crisis

Nine years after the peace accord between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was signed, the humanitarian situation in Colombia is still marked by large scale internal displacement and insecurity due to armed violence, with 10.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2026. The country has endured more than half a century of intense armed conflict, perpetuated by widespread illegal drug production and trafficking and rooted in territorial control by armed groups. The increased impact of natural hazards related to climate change and the integration of 2.9 million Venezuelan refugees are also driving humanitarian needs in Colombia.

Syria crisis: UN humanitarian office appeals to Security Council for critical funding

The United Nations is sounding the alarm over the deepening humanitarian crisis in Syria, with officials warning that a severe lack of funding threatens to undermine fragile progress and exacerbate the suffering of millions. On Wednesday, UN officials briefing the UN Security Council also highlighted the urgent need for increased international support for the country's political transition, including sanctions relief and political engagement.

Sudan crisis: Humanitarian supplies dry up in Zamzam camp as overall funding collapses

The international humanitarian organization Save the Children is warning that "time is running out" for the nearly one million residents of Sudan's largest camp for displaced people, many of them children, as food and medical supplies run out. The relief agency said Wednesday that it had just two days' worth of medical supplies left in its mobile health clinics in Zamzam camp in Sudan's western Darfur region.

Yemen Crisis

More than ten years of armed conflict in Yemen have caused tens of thousands of civilian casualties and forced millions to flee their homes, making Yemen one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. Two-thirds of the country's population - an estimated 23.1 million people - are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in 2026, with Yemen's most vulnerable and marginalized groups, including women and girls, at greatest risk.

Venezuela Crisis

Political turmoil and socioeconomic decline in Venezuela have led to the worst humanitarian crisis in South America and one of the largest migration crises in the world. Venezuela is experiencing a political and economic crisis marked by hyperinflation, limited food availability, medicine shortages, violent crime, and human right violations. Since 2014, more than 6.7 million Venezuelans have fled to Latin American and Caribbean countries, out of nearly 8 million Venezuelans who have left their country. In 2025, at least 7.9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the South American country.

Central African Republic Crisis

The Central African Republic (CAR) has been among the most neglected humanitarian crises for several years in a row. The country has been wracked by violent conflict since 2012. Nearly half of its population – 45 percent – requires humanitarian aid in 2025. While insecurity and violence against civilians continue to force Central Africans to flee their homes, humanitarian and development actors are helping many internally displaced persons and refugees to resume a normal life after several years of displacement.

South Sudan Crisis

South Sudan is in the midst of a dire humanitarian crisis driven by years of brutal civil war. Nearly 400,000 South Sudanese died as a result of the conflict that began in December 2013. Atrocities and attacks on civilians, including widespread sexual violence, defined the civil war. In 2025, the world’s youngest nation is on the verge of plunging back into civil war due to prevailing political tensions and a worsening security climate.
