Ukraine: Severe humanitarian crisis looms due to attacks on civilian infrastructures

The United Nations (UN) says that millions of people in Ukraine are without electricity, water or heating following a wave of Russian missile attacks on Tuesday that hit critical infrastructure in at least 16 of the country’s 24 regions and in the capital, Kyiv.  According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the damage to civilian infrastructure comes at a critical time when the temperature is dropping below zero, raising concerns about a serious humanitarian crisis during the harsh Ukrainian winter if people are unable to heat th

Yemen: Funding shortages, arbitrary detentions threaten response to mass hunger

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is spiraling out of control, with a staggering number of people facing hunger, including extreme conditions, and the United Nations’ ability to deliver aid severely hampered by ongoing conflict, funding shortages, and arbitrary detentions. This was the stark warning delivered on Monday by UN relief chief Tom Fletcher during a briefing to the UN Security Council.

Colombia: Ongoing conflict interrupts access to humanitarian assistance

Despite Colombia’s 2016 landmark peace agreement, armed groups that did not adhere to the accord continue to maintain a presence in rural areas and impose their own rules, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) warned on Friday. The humanitarian organization said the growing number of fighters and armed activities within these groups are isolating the civilian population and cutting them off from essential state services and humanitarian assistance.

DR Congo: UN launches appeal to tackle escalating humanitarian crisis amid critical funding gap

The United Nations and its humanitarian partner organizations, alongside the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), launched this year's Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) on Wednesday. They are calling on donors across the world for a funding total of US$1.4 billion, which would provide assistance to 7.3 million people in a country where nearly 15 million still need humanitarian aid — a figure that is widely considered underestimating the actual need.

US humanitarian aid: UN funds receive $2 billion contribution after extreme cuts of $10 billion

The United Nations and the United States government signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday, in which the US committed a meager US$2 billion to UN-managed humanitarian funds in 2026. It comes after the United States slashed its contribution to global humanitarian aid by more than $10 billion in 2025, leaving millions without lifesaving aid and dismantling the world's largest government aid agency.

NGO: Humanitarian aid in Yemen slashed by over 60 percent

Humanitarian aid in Yemen has been cut by 62 percent over five years, endangering the lives and futures of the country's most vulnerable people, especially children, the international non-governmental organization (NGO) Save the Children International warned on Monday. The continued funding cuts come as two-thirds of Yemen’s population – 21.6 million people, including 11 million children – are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection this year.

Sudan: Conflict spreads to Al-Jazirah State, restricting access to humanitarian aid

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says thousands have been displaced after clashes broke out Friday morning between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the outskirts of the Sudanese town of Wad Madani. As of Sunday, the fighting in the capital of Al-Jazirah State, located some 136 km southeast of Sudan’s national capital Khartoum, is ongoing.

Myanmar: 16.2 million people will require humanitarian assistance in 2026

Amid severe underfunding in 2025, the United Nations (UN) and its partners have issued a grim warning regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. According to the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP), published Wednesday, over 16.2 million people in Myanmar, including 5 million children, will require life-saving assistance and protection next year.

2024 deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers

The year is not yet over, but 2024 has already become the deadliest on record for humanitarian workers, with the war in Gaza driving up the numbers, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Friday, citing data from the Aid Worker Security Database (AWSD). The grim milestone was reached with the recorded deaths of 281 aid workers globally, surpassing the previous record of 2023.

Occupied Palestinian Territory: More than two million in need of humanitarian aid

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have launched Thursday a $502 million (€462 million) appeal for the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) to help 1.6 million of the most vulnerable people. The 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) estimates that 2.1 million Palestinians across the OPT need some form of humanitarian assistance this year. Among them are more than 1 million children.

Central America: UN launches humanitarian response plans for El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

The United Nations and its partner agencies in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras on Wednesday launched this year's humanitarian response plans to assist 2.2 million people in need, seeking a total of US$306 million. The three countries continue to face violence, food insecurity, extreme weather events and mixed movements of refugees and migrants, with more than 4.6 million people in need of humanitarian aid in 2025.

UN aid chief: Sudan's rival military leaders must commit to save delivery of humanitarian relief

The United Nations humanitarian chief is calling on Sudan's rival military leaders to publicly commit themselves to the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to millions of people struggling to survive amid escalating fighting. At the end of a visit to the region, Martin Griffiths, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, said Wednesday the Sudanese people face a humanitarian catastrophe.

CARE: Angola, Zambia, Burundi top list of forgotten humanitarian crises in 2023

Angola is once again number one among the top ten forgotten humanitarian crises that received the least media attention last year, according to the international humanitarian organization CARE.  For the eighth time, CARE has published its "Breaking the Silence" report to draw attention to forgotten crises around the world which are most neglected. Zambia and Burundi follow this year on second and third place.

Burkina Faso: UN seeks $659 million to address complex humanitarian crisis

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners released the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) for Burkina Faso on Tuesday, supporting the country's national humanitarian efforts. The HNRP requests US$658.5 million for key sectors, including food security, health, and essential services, as approximately 4.5 million people require humanitarian assistance.

Afghanistan: UN concerned over humanitarian funding shortfall

The United Nations has warned that the delivery of life-saving aid to millions of people in Afghanistan could be "severely impeded" as donors have only provided 7 percent of the humanitarian funding appeal for 2024. More than half of Afghanistan's population, 23.7 million - including 12.4 million children - are estimated to be in need of humanitarian assistance, but aid agencies will only be able to reach a fraction of them due to a severe lack of funds.

Humanitarian situation in eastern DR Congo increasingly dramatic

The United Nations envoy to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, DR Congo) has warned the Security Council (UN-SC) on Wednesday that the security situation in the eastern part of the country has "deteriorated considerably" in recent months and that the humanitarian situation has become "increasingly dramatic". Following the briefing, the UN-SC adopted a presidential statement, strongly condemning the increase in attacks by the “Mouvement du 23 mars” (M23) rebel group in North Kivu province.

Yemen: Children starve to death while the world looks away

Children from displaced families are dying of starvation in parts of Yemen, according to the United Nations, as extreme hunger and malnutrition take hold. Over 17 million people in Yemen are acutely food insecure, a figure expected to surpass 18 million by February 2026 amid a critical crisis in humanitarian funding.

Myanmar earthquake: UN humanitarian coordinator warns of worsening crisis

As the death toll in Myanmar continues to rise following Friday's historic earthquake, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in the country said on Tuesday that the scale and scope of the earthquake's impact is vast, spanning multiple states and regions, particularly the central part of Myanmar. The death toll is expected to rise to more than 3,000, according to the country's military junta, while thousands are reportedly injured and hundreds missing.
