UN Secretary-General: Time running out to stop climate crisis

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said Thursday that it is not too late to “stop the worst” of the climate crisis, but only with “dramatic, immediate” action. Guterres made the comments as the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced today that the first three weeks of July have been the warmest three-week period on record and the month is on track to be the hottest July and the hottest month on record.

Report: One in three children worldwide exposed to severe water scarcity

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reports that one in three children worldwide – or 739 million – live in areas exposed to high or very high water scarcity, with climate change threatening to make things worse. According to a new UNICEF report released Monday, the double burden of dwindling water availability and inadequate drinking water and sanitation services is compounding the situation, putting 436 million children at even greater risk.

Somalia: Conflict, climate crisis, underfunding accelerate hunger crisis

The head of the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) has warned Thursday that conflict and climate change are pushing millions of Somalis to the brink of hunger, as the agency is running out of funds to help them. The longest drought on record has killed millions of livestock and decimated crops. It has recently given way to disastrous flash floods in the south of the country.

Vulnerable Groups

Vulnerable groups in humanitarian crises may include women and girls, children, refugees and displaced persons, LGBTI people, elderly people, people with disabilities, people with acute or chronic diseases, religious or ethnic minorities, and indigenous peoples. These populations may face additional risks and challenges during crisis situations, and may require targeted assistance and support to address their specific needs. Humanitarian emergencies can exacerbate the existing vulnerabilities of these groups.

Medical Humanitarian Aid

Medical humanitarian assistance and support for health services are urgently needed in crises around the world. A UN agency and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) specialize in providing health care in humanitarian crises or in the urgent delivery of medicines to people affected by conflicts and disasters.

DONARE has selected 18 prominent Canadian humanitarian organizations that respond to humanitarian crises around the world. The nonprofits on this list have a significant impact on humanitarian efforts worldwide. There are many more Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), charities and aid groups working both domestically and internationally to address a wide range of challenges.

Hunger and Food Insecurity

Global hunger levels remain alarmingly high. At least 37 million people are on the brink of famine or are already experiencing famine conditions. Although the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone, more than eight percent of people worldwide still go hungry. In 2024, over 295 million people were acutely food insecure and in urgent need of assistance, with armed conflict being the primary cause of acute hunger.

Children in Need

Millions of children are threatened by humanitarian crises around the world. Many are at the center of wars, armed conflicts, persecution, natural disasters, and other complex crises. Children pay a high price for humanitarian crises. They have often experienced or witnessed acts of violence and are at risk of neglect, violence, abuse, exploitation, human trafficking, or military recruitment. Children's rights are under threat all over the world.

Faith-based organizations, particularly Christian charities, play a significant role in providing humanitarian assistance around the world.  If you prefer donating to a faith-based organization as opposed to a secular humanitarian organization, DONARE has selected thirteen charity organizations and one alliance that deliver emergency humanitarian aid needed in crises worldwide.

Refugees and IDPs

The number of forcibly displaced people continues to rise. As of December 2024, over 123 million people worldwide had been forcibly displaced due to persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations, and events that had seriously disrupted public order. By the end of last year, a record 73.5 million people had been uprooted from their homes by conflict and violence and remained displaced within their own countries as internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The United Kingdom offers a diverse landscape of humanitarian organizations, and is home to numerous charities that work on emergency response, poverty, health, education, human rights, and a wide range of other issues. DONARE has selected 25 well-known and influential British humanitarian organizations that respond to humanitarian crises around the world. These charities have a substantial impact on humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Extreme heat has devastating impact on hundreds of millions worldwide

Soaring temperatures in July had a devastating impact on the well-being of hundreds of millions of people around the world who found the month's extreme heat too much to bear, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The world's two hottest days on record were recorded last month - another indication of the extent to which greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the world's climate.

The United States is home to a large number of humanitarian organizations that work internationally to deliver much-needed humanitarian assistance overseas. These aid agencies respond to natural disasters, conflicts, and other emergencies, providing food, water, shelter, health care, and other critical support. Human Rights Organizations

Human rights and humanitarian aid are closely intertwined. In humanitarian crises around the world the most basic human rights are threatened: the right to live, the right to health. More often than not human rights violations are the cause of a crisis or at the center of it. Humanitarian organizations also must respect the rights of people in need and must pay attention to them in the provision of emergency relief.

Dozens of countries hit by severe flooding

Numerous countries around the world have been hit by torrential rains, flash floods, river flooding, and other large-scale flooding events that have submerged vast areas of land, caused devastation, affected millions of people, displaced hundreds of thousands, and claimed hundreds of lives. Although the rainy season is still underway in many regions of the Northern Hemisphere, the magnitude of the ongoing natural disasters points to the effects of the climate crisis and the La Niña phenomenon.

Report: Weather-related disasters led to 43 million displacements of children over six years

Extreme weather events linked to the climate crisis, such as storms, floods, droughts and wildfires, have displaced 43.1 million children in 44 countries over a six-year period, according to a new United Nations report. The analysis by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), released Friday, finds that an average of 20,000 children were displaced every day between 2016 and 2021.

South Sudan: UN agencies call for action to avoid catastrophic food crisis

In a joint statement, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) warned today that conflict, climate change, and soaring costs in South Sudan are causing some of the highest levels of hunger in the world. The warning comes as the heads of the three United Nations agencies wrapped up a three-day visit to the country.

Somalia needs continued international support, says UN expert

Somalia is showing resilience to persistent security, human rights and socio-economic challenges, but needs continued international support as climate change and natural disasters exacerbate suffering, loss of livelihoods and rights violations, an independent United Nations expert said today. In her new report to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), Isha Dyfan highlighted the ongoing insecurity in the East African country.
