Conference on Lake Chad Region concludes with 500 million pledge

The third High Level Conference on the Lake Chad Region has concluded Tuesday with reaffirmed commitments from Lake Chad Basin countries and international partners for a coordinated, regional and sustainable response, supported by humanitarian and development organizations. More than US$500 million (€458 million) in aid has been pledged to support joint actions at the local level.

Hunger and malnutrition on the rise across South Sudan

Hunger and malnutrition are on the rise across the flood, drought, and conflict-affected areas of South Sudan, the United Nations (UN) warns. In a joint statement Thursday, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said that some communities are likely to face starvation if humanitarian assistance is not sustained and climate adaptation measures are not scaled-up.

Colombia: Displacement continues eight years after historic peace deal

According to the international humanitarian organization Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the number of people forced to flee their homes in Colombia has doubled since the historic peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was signed eight years ago. While more than 130,000 people were forced to flee in Colombia in 2016, NRC estimates that the number of newly displaced people will exceed 260,000 in 2024.

Philippines: More than eleven million affected by six major storms within four weeks

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that multiple tropical cyclones have struck the Philippines in the span of a month, resulting in millions of people affected, repeated and prolonged displacements, damaged and destroyed homes, and prolonged flooding that has prevented communities from fully recovering. Another super typhoon is forecast to make landfall this weekend.

UN: 305 million people will need humanitarian aid in 2025

Multiple unending conflicts, climate change and a blatant disregard for long-established international humanitarian law (IHL) will leave a staggering 305 million people in need of humanitarian aid next year, the UN's top aid official warned on Wednesday, as the United Nations launched an appeal for US$47.4 billion to provide life-saving relief in more than 30 countries and 9 refugee-hosting regions.

UN: 300 million people will need humanitarian aid in 2024

In 2024, 299.4 million around the world will need humanitarian assistance and protection, due to conflicts, climate emergencies, collapsing economies, and other drivers. The United Nations today launched its global humanitarian appeal for 2024, calling for US$46.4 billion to help 180.5 million people with life-saving assistance and protection, a significant reduction compared to 2023.

Mozambique: Tropical Cyclone Chido devastates conflict-torn north

Tropical Cyclone Chido has affected some 190,000 people in northern Mozambique, a region already severely affected by armed conflict, since making landfall over the weekend, according to preliminary figures reported by the United Nations. Meanwhile, Mozambique's National Disaster Management Authority said on Tuesday that at least 34 people have been killed and more than 300 injured by the extreme storm.

Flooding kills at least 400 in Democratic Republic of Congo

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, DR Congo), heavy flooding has impacted several villages in Kalehe territory, in South Kivu province since Thursday. According to the United Nations, at least 400 people lost their lives due to floods and mudslides triggered by excessive rainfall.

UN releases $110 million for neglected humanitarian crises

As global humanitarian funding plummets due to extreme funding cuts by the United States, the United Nations on Thursday released US$110 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to scale up life-saving assistance in ten of the world's most underfunded and neglected crises in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In total, more than 307 million people around the world are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Mali: More than 7 million people urgently need humanitarian aid

The 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan for Mali was launched this week in Bamako, the capital of the country. The United Nations, along with humanitarian partner organizations, will need over US$700 million to assist more than 4.1 million people across the Sahel country in 2024, UN officials announced on Thursday. An estimated 7.1 million people in Mali require humanitarian assistance this year, among them are some 3.8 million children.

Hundreds of thousands dying from preventable heat-related causes

As global warming intensifies and deadly heatwaves spread across the world, becoming the “new normal,” the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is calling on governments to adopt heat action plans to protect “hundreds of thousands of people dying from preventable heat-related causes each year.”  Meteorologists forecast temperatures in North America, Asia, across North Africa and the Mediterranean will rise above 40 degrees Celsius for a prolonged number of days this week.

Global forced displacement surges to 120 million

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports that forced displacement around the world has reached historic highs, driven by conflict, persecution, human rights abuses, the climate crisis and other events disturbing public order. In a report released on Thursday, UNHCR said the number of forcibly displaced people continued to rise this year and now stands at 120 million.

CARE: Ten most underreported humanitarian crises of 2022 all in Africa

The ten most under-reported humanitarian crises in 2022 were all in Africa, according to new analysis by the international humanitarian organization CARE.  The organization’s annual “Breaking the Silence” report, that was released today, highlights forgotten crises which received the least media attention over the course of the year. The report is being published for the seventh time.

South Sudan: Starvation on the rise as predicted floods threaten further disruption

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that South Sudan is facing a "perfect storm" of ongoing violence, imminent flooding, economic crisis, underfunding of the humanitarian response, and an influx of new arrivals due to the war in neighboring Sudan. The warning comes as 9 million people in the country are in need of humanitarian assistance. Among those in need are 4.9 million children.

258 million people needed urgent food assistance in 2022

The number of people experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity and requiring urgent food and livelihood assistance has increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2022, a new report said today.  Over a quarter of a billion people were estimated to face acute hunger last year because of conflict, economic shocks and weather extremes related to the climate crisis, with the Ukraine war contributing to the increase.

UN: South Sudan in urgent need of additional humanitarian funding

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is warning that hundreds of thousands of people in South Sudan are at risk of going without life-saving assistance unless additional funding for the humanitarian response is received without delay. Some 9 million people - including 4.9 million children - in the country are in need of humanitarian aid, and the outlook for the coming months is worrying.

Millions in Somalia face worsening hunger crisis amid critical funding shortfall

The World Food Programme (WFP) issued a dire warning on Friday, highlighting that millions in Somalia are at risk of worsening hunger and malnutrition due to critical funding shortages. These shortages have forced the United Nations agency to reduce its emergency food assistance support by over two-thirds. By November, the WFP will only be able to provide assistance to 350,000 people, down from 1.1 million in August.

Zimbabwe: Historic drought threatens 7.6 million people with hunger

United Nations officials have appealed for international support to help Zimbabwe cope with the humanitarian impact of a historic drought that has left 7.6 million people at risk of acute hunger. More than half of the harvest has been destroyed due to a drought caused by the warming El Niño episode in 2023-2024.

Staggering numbers: 318 million people are expected to face acute hunger in 2026

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warns that the global hunger crisis is deepening. The organization expects 318 million people to face crisis-level hunger or worse next year — more than double the number in 2019. However, the world's response remains "slow, fragmented, and underfunded."

South Sudan: Hundreds of thousands impacted by severe flooding

Severe flooding continues to wreak havoc in South Sudan, affecting nearly 270,000 people in 12 counties across four states: Jonglei, Unity, Upper Nile, and Central Equatoria, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Thursday. These floods come at a time when the country is already facing an alarming humanitarian crisis, with 9.3 million people in need of assistance and 7.7 million experiencing acute hunger.
