ECHO

Part of the European Union system, ECHO is the short name for the European Commission's Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection. The short name is derived from European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations. Established in 1992, ECHO is one of the world's largest players in the field of humanitarian assistance. Its responsibilities include both humanitarian aid and civil protection. In the case of humanitarian aid, ECHO shares competence with European Union member states.

Myanmar: UN officials raise alarm over direct targeting of civilians

Senior United Nations officials on Monday expressed alarm at the continued escalation of conflict in Myanmar, amid reports of the direct targeting of civilians in aerial bombardments and the abduction and forced recruitment of children by the Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) and ethnic armed organizations (EAOs). Meanwhile, 18.6 million women, children and men in Myanmar are in need of humanitarian assistance - the fifth-largest number in the world.

Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief is a faith-based humanitarian and development organization dedicated to saving the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable people. Founded in England in 1984, the organization now works in over 45 countries to support individuals, families and communities through emergency relief and development projects. The Muslim charity is based in Birmingham, UK. The Islamic Relief Worldwide network consists of 15 independent partner organizations in Europe, Africa, Asia and the USA.

World Vision International

World Vision International (WVI) is a Christian evangelical non-governmental organization (NGO) with a focus on development cooperation and humanitarian disaster relief. Its work also focuses on supporting children at risk. WVI was founded in 1950 and is now one of the world's largest aid organizations and one of the largest Christian non-governmental organizations. The NGO's donation projects are mainly financed through child sponsorships. World Vision International is active in more than 90 countries.

Sudan is facing the world's largest hunger crisis

Severe acute food insecurity has increased massively since the start of the war in Sudan, leaving more than half of the country hungry. The Food Security and Livelihoods Cluster (FSLC) said in an advocacy note released on Monday that urgent action, resources and funding are needed to prevent further deterioration and escalation of needs.

Myanmar: Lack of access and funding hampering aid to 18 million people

United Nations Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) Martin Griffiths has today called for expanded humanitarian access and increased funding to assist the 18 million people in need of aid across Myanmar. The call comes as Myanmar’s overall humanitarian and human rights situation has deteriorated to alarming levels, exacerbated by the military’s strategy to prevent life-saving humanitarian aid from reaching those who desperately need it.

Sudan: UN, Member States issue urgent call for stepped-up action to end war

At a ministerial meeting on Wednesday, the United Nations and Member States issued an urgent call for stepped-up action to end the war in Sudan and accelerate the humanitarian response in the region. 17 months of brutal conflict in Sudan have fueled the world's worst hunger crisis and one of the world's largest displacement crises, with more than 10 million people forced to flee their homes.

WFP resumes operations in Sudan as fighting continues

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has lifted its suspension of operations in Sudan, as the fighting there threatens millions with hunger. The WFP had paused its work in the country when three staff members were killed in North Darfur on April 15 - the first day of the conflict between Sudan’s army and a paramilitary unit, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

UN report: Israel secretly detains, tortures thousands of Palestinians

Thousands of Palestinians have been arbitrarily and secretly detained, tortured and ill-treated by Israeli authorities since the October 7 attack by Palestinian armed groups that triggered Israel's war in the Gaza Strip, according to a report released Wednesday by the United Nations human rights office. Meanwhile, Israeli bombardment continues throughout much of the Gaza Strip, resulting in increasing civilian deaths, maiming, injuries, displacement and destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Syria crisis: More than 370,000 displaced as fighting escalates

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that civilians, including humanitarian workers, are facing serious threats to their safety as hostilities escalate in northern Syria and spread to other parts of the country. The fighting also continues to cause severe damage to critical infrastructure and disrupt aid operations, while Syria is already facing one of the world's largest humanitarian crises.

UN: Collective punishment of Gaza population must immediately cease

As the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip further unfolds and hundreds of civilians are killed daily by Israeli airstrikes, the United Nations has urged the Israeli government to cease its collective punishment of the entire population of Gaza, emphasizing that collective punishment is a war crime. A spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) demanded Friday that the “use of dehumanizing language against Palestinians must also be halted.”

Gender-based violence in Sudan on the rise as fighting continues

Senior United Nations officials today voiced shock and condemnation at increasing reports of gender-based violence (GBV) in Sudan – including conflict-related sexual violence against internally displaced and refugee women and girls – since clashes erupted in the country in mid-April. Fighting in Sudan has now entered its 12th week, with no end in sight after multiple failed ceasefire attempts.

Refugees, migrants face extreme horrors while crossing African continent

Thousands of refugees and migrants risking their lives on dangerous land routes across the African continent face extreme forms of violence, human rights abuses and exploitation, according to a report released Friday by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC). The organizations say the deaths of refugees and migrants in the Sahara Desert are believed to be twice as high as those at sea.

Malawi: 4.2 million people face hunger amid drought in Southern Africa

Almost 4.2 million people in Malawi are estimated to experience high levels of acute food insecurity between May and September 2024, including 56,000 people in IPC Phase 4 (emergency) and 4.1 million people in IPC Phase 3 (crisis), according to the latest IPC analysis. The analysis, released on Friday, warns that most people facing crisis or emergency levels are unable to produce enough of their own food and rely on market purchases.

Zimbabwe: Historic drought threatens 7.6 million people with hunger

United Nations officials have appealed for international support to help Zimbabwe cope with the humanitarian impact of a historic drought that has left 7.6 million people at risk of acute hunger. More than half of the harvest has been destroyed due to a drought caused by the warming El Niño episode in 2023-2024.

Colombia: Displacement continues eight years after historic peace deal

According to the international humanitarian organization Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the number of people forced to flee their homes in Colombia has doubled since the historic peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was signed eight years ago. While more than 130,000 people were forced to flee in Colombia in 2016, NRC estimates that the number of newly displaced people will exceed 260,000 in 2024.

Hurricane Melissa affects over 5 million people across Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that Hurricane Melissa, a powerful storm that struck the Caribbean Sea in late October, affected over 5 million people across Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti. The storm killed at least 75 people and displaced or forced the evacuation of over 770,000.
