World hunger levels reach catastrophic proportions

World hunger levels are reaching catastrophic proportions with 44 countries suffering with serious or alarming levels of hunger, according to the new 2022 Global Hunger Index (GHI), released Thursday. The report, which is jointly published by the international humanitarian organization Concern Worldwide and the German charity Welthungerhilfe, cites the Ukraine war as one of the reasons why nine nations, including Somalia where famine is imminent and Yemen, have alarming levels of hunger.

Complex Emergency

A complex emergency is a – often protracted - situation in which multiple factors, such as war, conflict, displacement, natural disasters or human-made disasters, and other crises, converge to create a multifaceted and challenging humanitarian situation. These emergencies are frequently characterized by a high level of violence, political instability, total or considerable breakdown of governmental authority, social disruption, and economic decline, and can lead to widespread displacement and suffering among affected populations.

Mass graves discovered in Ituri province of DR Congo

Mass graves containing the bodies of 49 civilians have been discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, DRC), according to the United Nations (UN). The graves were found in two villages in Ituri province in the eastern part of the country by peacekeepers of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), a United Nations spokesperson in New York said on Wednesday.

Pakistan floods: Over three million children at risk

More than three million children are in need of humanitarian assistance and at increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning and malnutrition due to the most severe flooding in Pakistan’s recent history, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned today. UNICEF says it is working with Government and non-government partners to respond to the urgent needs of children and families in affected areas.

Over 295 million people in world's most fragile regions face acute hunger

Hunger and child malnutrition rose for the sixth consecutive year in 2024, pushing millions of people to the brink in some of the world's most fragile regions, according to a new report released Friday. The 2025 Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) shows that conflict, economic shocks, climate extremes and forced displacement are fueling food insecurity and malnutrition around the world, with catastrophic consequences for many regions.

Haiti descending into catastrophic spiral of violence

The newly appointed United Nations Special Representative for Haiti has said that the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the country demands that Haiti remains at the center of international attention and needs action now. In her first briefing to the UN Security Council Wednesday, Maria Isabel Salvador stressed that gang violence is expanding at an alarming rate in areas previously considered relatively safe in the capital, Port-au-Prince, as well as outside the city.

UNHCR: Climate change poses growing threat to people already fleeing war

A new United Nations report warns that people forced to flee war, violence and persecution are increasingly finding themselves on the front lines of the global climate crisis, exposed to a deadly combination of threats but without the funding and support to adapt. The warning comes as three-quarters of the world's more than 123 million forcibly displaced people live in countries heavily exposed to climate change.

Somalia needs continued international support, says UN expert

Somalia is showing resilience to persistent security, human rights and socio-economic challenges, but needs continued international support as climate change and natural disasters exacerbate suffering, loss of livelihoods and rights violations, an independent United Nations expert said today. In her new report to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), Isha Dyfan highlighted the ongoing insecurity in the East African country.

Donors pledge 1.5 billion amid catastrophic situation in parts of Sudan

The international community pledged $1.5 billion Monday toward tackling the massive humanitarian crisis in Sudan, as fighting between forces led by rival generals has only been punctuated by brief truces and no political solution appears close at hand. Meanwhile, the lasted 72-hour truce in Sudan that came into force Sunday morning seems to be holding, at least in the capital Khartoum.

Deadly violence erupts in DR Congo’s west

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is alarmed by a surge of deadly intercommunal violence which has displaced nearly 30,000 people since July in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s western locality of Kwamouth. According to a media briefing Tuesday, clashes started over customary taxes on agricultural land use between the Teke and Yaka communities. More than 142 people have been reportedly killed, including some who were beheaded.

Eastern DR Congo: Gross human rights violations may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity

A new report by the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) released on Friday accuses all parties involved in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) eastern provinces of North and South Kivu of committing severe violations of international humanitarian law that may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The report comes as continued violence in the eastern part of the country continues to claim civilian lives and cause new displacement.

Venezuela crisis: Repression worsens following presidential election

A United Nations fact-finding mission warns that repression in Venezuela has worsened following flawed presidential elections on July 28, with Nicolás Maduro's government crushing all dissent in a bid to retain power "at any price." Tuesday's report comes as there is no end in sight to the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, with at least 7.6 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.

Ukraine: UN officials condemn deadly Palm Sunday attack in Sumy

The United Nations has condemned a Russian attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday that reportedly killed at least 35 people, including two children, and injured at least 117 others, including 15 children. The two missiles hit a busy street in the center of the city in the northeast of the country, damaging residential buildings, an educational institution and civilian vehicles as people were out celebrating Palm Sunday, a major religious holiday in Ukraine.

Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD)

The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) is the official Catholic aid agency for England and Wales. CAFOD is a member of Caritas Internationalis. Working through local partners, the Christian charity currently supports national partners in providing humanitarian assistance in more than 30 countries across the world. The faith-based aid agency was established in 1960; CAFOD Headquarters are located in London.

Plan International is a global organization working to advance children's rights and equality for girls. Church Agency Network Disaster Operations (CAN DO)

Church Agencies Network – Disaster Operations (CAN DO) is a consortium of faith-based agencies and a subgroup of the Church Agency Network (CAN). The Australian alliance was formed in 2015 to better coordinate and strengthen the global humanitarian, disaster risk reduction and management and resilience building work of CAN. CAN is a group of twelve Church-based overseas aid and development agencies committed to empowering people and providing avenues for them to overcome injustice and poverty.

Islamic Relief UK

Islamic Relief is a faith-based humanitarian and development agency working to save the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Established in the UK in 1984, the leading Muslim charity now works in over 45 countries assisting individuals, families and communities through emergency response and development projects.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) was founded in 1933 with the aim of helping politically persecuted people. Today, it is one of the largest non-governmental organizations (NGO) that focuses on supporting refugees worldwide. The NGO provides emergency aid and long-term support for refugees and people who have been displaced by war, persecution or natural disasters. The international headquarters of the organization are located in the United States. The IRC helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive and rebuild their lives.

International Rescue Committee UK

Founded in 1933 with the aim of helping the politically persecuted, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest non-governmental organizations (NGO) focusing on the support of refugees worldwide. The NGO provides emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster. Its international headquarters are based in the United States. The IRC helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive and rebuild their lives. IRC UK is based in London.
