War in Ukraine: UN seeks $4.2 billion for relief aid in the country, refugees

The United Nations and humanitarian agencies have launched on Monday a combined US$ 4.2 billion appeal to donors to bring relief aid to some 10.8 million people in the war-affected communities in Ukraine but also to Ukrainian refugees and their host communities in the region throughout 2024.  A recent wave of Russian attacks underscores the devastating civilian cost of the war, while a bitter winter is ratcheting up the urgent need for life-saving humanitarian assistance.

Rohingya refugees face severe hunger as aid cuts continue

Just weeks after thousands of Rohingya refugees lost their homes to Cyclone Mocha, they face another blow as funding shortages force the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to cut food vouchers in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar to just US$ 8, or less than 9 cents per meal. The UN agency said Friday that funding shortfalls had already led to a cut in food aid earlier this year.

WFP increases food rations for Rohingya refugees

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has increased the value of its monthly food voucher from US$8 to US$10 per person for the entire Rohingya population in Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh. The move, starting January 1, comes after a sharp reduction of food aid by one third in 2023. In March last year, the voucher value for refugees was reduced from US$12 to US$10, a further reduction - down to US$8 - was implemented in June, leaving tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees hungry and in growing despair.

2024: Deadliest year on record for migrants, refugees on routes

At least 8,938 people died on mixed migration routes worldwide in 2024, making it the deadliest year on record, according to new data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).  The IOM said Friday that the 2024 toll continues a five-year trend of more deaths each year, and that last year's toll surpassed the previous record set in 2023, when 8,747 deaths were recorded.

Sahel: UNHCR urges inclusion of refugees and IDPs in flood response

With the onset of the rainy season, severe flooding in Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Niger and Nigeria has significantly worsened the situation of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in affected areas, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). UNHCR spokesman William Spindler on Friday reminded government authorities of the importance of including displaced people in national response plans.

UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA)

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is a UN humanitarian and development organization. The organization provides health, education and other basic services to Palestinian refugees. Founded in 1949, UNRWA operates in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. As a political solution for the Palestinian refugees is not in sight, the UN General Assembly has repeatedly extended UNRWA's mandate.

Ukraine: Millions of refugees and IDPs face uncertain future

A new study by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warns that millions of Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) face an uncertain future as Ukraine enters its third year of war with Russia and its battle for survival risks becoming a protracted crisis.  Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is seeking to clarify the fate of 23,000 persons whose families have no news of them, either because they have been captured, killed, or because they lost contact after fleeing their homes.

UNHCR and IOM urge Pakistan to protect Afghan refugees

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) are appealing to Pakistan to continue its protection of all vulnerable Afghans who have sought safety in the country and could be at imminent risk if forced to return. Today’s appeal comes after Pakistan announced plans this week to forcefully repatriate Afghan nationals back to Afghanistan. The neighboring country is going through a severe humanitarian crisis with several human rights challenges, particularly for women and girls.

Global humanitarian funding cuts: Over 11.6 million refugees risk losing access to aid

A new report published on Friday states that up to 11.6 million refugees and others forced to flee could lose access to direct humanitarian assistance from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) this year due to major cuts to humanitarian budgets around the world. Global crisis in humanitarian funding hits children, refugees and displaced people

Children, refugees and internally displaced people around the world are paying the price for the funding crisis that has gripped the international aid sector - made much worse by radical cuts by the United States - the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned on Friday. Brutal funding cutbacks to the humanitarian sector are putting millions of lives at risk, with immediate and devastating consequences for the most vulnerable.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Tuesday it is concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in eastern Chad amid a massive influx of refugees and returnees from neighboring Sudan. More than 55,000 Sudanese refugees and 39,000 Chadian returnees have been registered in Chad's Ennedi-Est and Wadi Fira provinces since violence escalated in Sudan's North Darfur state in April.

Rights group: Saudi Arabia commits mass killings of migrants and refugees at Yemen border

Between March 2022 and June 2023, Saudi border guards have killed at least hundreds of Ethiopian migrants, refugees and asylum seekers who tried to cross the border between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a report released Monday. The rights group states that these killings, which appear to be ongoing, would constitute a crime against humanity, if committed as part of a government policy to murder migrants.
