UNHCR urges universal accession to Refugee Convention

Sunday marks the 73rd anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, the cornerstone of refugee protection that has saved and protected the lives of millions of people around the world fleeing war, violence, persecution and human rights abuses. To mark the anniversary, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) urged the remaining 46 UN member and observer states that have not yet done so to accede to the Convention.

Further Crises

The world is plagued by further humanitarian crises that should neither be forgotten nor neglected. Though DONARE presently does not compile a complete crisis profile, here are snapshots of some of these humanitarian situations. The emergency situations include: the crisis in Madagascar due to ongoing food insecurity and vulnerability to climate-related disasters; the crisis in Malawi due to drought and flooding; and the ongoing crisis in the Western Sahara.

South Sudan Crisis

South Sudan is in the midst of a dire humanitarian crisis driven by years of brutal civil war. Nearly 400,000 South Sudanese died as a result of the conflict that began in December 2013. Atrocities and attacks on civilians, including widespread sexual violence, defined the civil war. In 2025, the world’s youngest nation is on the verge of plunging back into civil war due to prevailing political tensions and a worsening security climate.

Record 250,000 people cross perilous Darién Gap

As the number of migrants and refugees crossing the Darién jungle between Panama and Colombia reaches record levels, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) are calling for a comprehensive, regional, and collaborative approach to address the serious protection risks and urgent humanitarian needs of people on the move in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Niger political crisis could spiral into humanitarian emergency

With no political solution in sight, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warns that Niger’s political crisis could rapidly deteriorate into a humanitarian emergency as attacks by non-state armed groups (NSAGs) continue and sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the country begin to take effect. Meanwhile, 45 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), working in the Sahel country, are calling on the international community to introduce humanitarian exemptions to the collective sanctions imposed against Niger.

Medical Humanitarian Aid

Medical humanitarian assistance and support for health services are urgently needed in crises around the world. A UN agency and several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) specialize in providing health care in humanitarian crises or in the urgent delivery of medicines to people affected by conflicts and disasters.

Huge fire leaves 12,000 homeless in Rohingya refugee camp

A massive fire broke out Sunday in the middle of a refugee camp occupied by Myanmar Rohingya refugees in southeastern Bangladesh, leaving thousands homeless under the open sky. The number of casualties remains unknown although local officials said they managed to take many people away to safety while some refugees said they had missing family members.

Ethiopia: WFP warns of rising hunger and malnutrition

Hunger and malnutrition are on the rise in Ethiopia as ongoing conflict, regional instability, displacement, drought and economic shocks leave millions without enough food, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday. WFP warned that its life-saving response has been severely hampered by critical funding shortfalls, with 3.6 million of the most vulnerable people at imminent risk of losing food assistance.

Support trafficking victims on routes, UNHCR urges

Protection services are severely lacking for refugees and migrants - including survivors of human trafficking - making perilous journeys from the Sahel and Horn of Africa towards North Africa and Europe, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warns. In a report released 29 July 2022, the eve of World Day against Trafficking in Persons, UNHCR mapped protection services available to asylum-seekers, refugees, and migrants as they travel along these routes.

Key Players in Humanitarian Aid

Humanitarian aid is a complex and multifaceted field involving a network of a wide range of international, regional and national actors, from international organizations and governments to non-governmental organizations and local partner organizations. Each of these actors has a specific role to play in responding to humanitarian crises, providing relief or supporting humanitarian operations.

UNHCR chief calls for bold global action to support Syrians returning home

At the end of a visit to Syria, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, on Monday called on the international community to take bold and decisive action to help Syrians rebuild their war-torn country and support displaced Syrians returning home. More than 500,000 refugees have returned to Syria since September, including 200,000 after the fall of the Assad government in early December.

Colombia Crisis

Nine years after the peace accord between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was signed, the humanitarian situation in Colombia is still marked by large scale internal displacement and insecurity due to armed violence, with 10.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in 2026. The country has endured more than half a century of intense armed conflict, perpetuated by widespread illegal drug production and trafficking and rooted in territorial control by armed groups. The increased impact of natural hazards related to climate change and the integration of 2.9 million Venezuelan refugees are also driving humanitarian needs in Colombia.

CERF - Central Emergency Response Fund

Why I donate to CERF

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) as "a United Nations success story." I couldn't agree more. Since its creation seventeen years ago, the Fund has proven to be one of the fastest and most effective ways to finance global humanitarian action. It would be very welcome if more people were aware of the Fund and would donate to CERF. The Emergency Response Fund finances humanitarian aid that goes where it is needed most urgently.

Syria Crisis

The Syrian conflict has caused immense human suffering for people both inside and outside the country. Since 2011, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed and maimed, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. In December 2024, Syria experienced a dramatic turn of events when rebel forces took control of the capital, Damascus, and President Bashar al-Assad resigned and fled the country following a swift offensive across Syria. This raised hopes that the 14-year civil war was coming to an end. Although Syria entered a new era in 2025, the humanitarian crisis is far from over.

Darién jungle: UN agencies warn of deepening humanitarian emergency in the Americas

As the number of refugees and migrants crossing the Darién jungle this year reaches an unprecedented 500,000 – more than double the crossings last year – the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned Thursday of a deepening humanitarian emergency in the Americas and called for a comprehensive regional approach to address the serious protection risks and urgent humanitarian needs of people on the move.

Forgotten Crises

Donating and paying attention are closely linked. Around the world, there are millions of people suffering, far from the limelight, hidden from the eyes of the global public. Many of these people are in urgent need of international support to survive. Forgotten crises are humanitarian emergencies that do not make the international headlines and do not attract enough political attention, so that the people affected receive no or insufficient aid.

UK for UNHCR

United Kingdom for UNHCR or UK for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national funding partner for the United Kingdom. The non-governmental organization (NGO) is one of ten UNHCR National Fundraising Partners worldwide. The NGO helps refugees and other displaced people by advocating for their protection and raising funds to enable UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced families in need around the world.

Australia for UNHCR

Australia for UNHCR is the United Nations Refugee Agency’s national funding partner for Australia. The non-governmental organization (NGO) is one of ten UNHCR National Fundraising Partners worldwide. The NGO helps refugees and other displaced people by advocating for their protection and raising funds to enable UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced families in need around the world.

Humanitarian Organizations Canada

Canada is home to numerous humanitarian organizations that focus on a diverse range of issues, including but not limited to poverty, health, education, human rights, and emergency response. DONARE has selected 18 prominent Canadian humanitarian organizations that respond to humanitarian crises around the world. The nonprofits on this list have a significant impact on humanitarian efforts worldwide. There are many more Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), charities and aid groups working both domestically and internationally to address a wide range of challenges.

Hunger and Food Insecurity

Global hunger levels remain alarmingly high. At least 37 million people are on the brink of famine or are already experiencing famine conditions. Although the world produces more than enough food to feed everyone, more than eight percent of people worldwide still go hungry. In 2024, over 295 million people were acutely food insecure and in urgent need of assistance, with armed conflict being the primary cause of acute hunger.
