Danish Refugee Council (DRC)

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is an international humanitarian organization that supports displaced persons around the world. The DRC was founded in 1956 and is Denmark's largest non-governmental organization (NGO). The aid agency is active in over 40 countries and is one of the most important NGOs worldwide supporting refugees and internally displaced persons. The Danish Refugee Council is active in all phases of displacement and provides protection and life-saving humanitarian aid. The aid organization is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

International Organization for Migration (IOM)

Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, bringing together the governments of 171 member states. The United Nations agency works closely with intergovernmental and non-governmental partners to support migrants around the world, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees and migrant workers. IOM is also active in emergency situations, saving lives and protecting people on the move. In 2025, the UN agency aims to assist 101 million people worldwide.

Conference on Lake Chad Region concludes with 500 million pledge

The third High Level Conference on the Lake Chad Region has concluded Tuesday with reaffirmed commitments from Lake Chad Basin countries and international partners for a coordinated, regional and sustainable response, supported by humanitarian and development organizations. More than US$500 million (€458 million) in aid has been pledged to support joint actions at the local level.

Gaza: Despite ceasefire, UN staff and facilities face grave risks

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that, despite the ceasefire, UN staff and facilities in the Gaza Strip continue to come under fire, posing an unacceptable risk to their safety. Meanwhile, attacks against civilians have continued, with more than 340 people killed and over 880 injured by Israeli forces since the ceasefire took effect on October 10.

Yemen: Aid agencies appeal for $2.16 billion as humanitarian crisis deepens

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners issued the 2026 Yemen Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) on Wednesday, calling for US$2.16 billion to provide life-saving assistance to 12 million people across Yemen. In 2026, 22.3 million women, men, and children require humanitarian aid and protection as the country grapples with the region's most severe hunger emergency.

Gaza reconstruction talks must not distract from ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, say UN aid agencies

Amid the launch of the US administration’s “Board of Peace” and ongoing reconstruction talks on the Gaza Strip, United Nations aid agencies insisted on Friday that Gazans need immediate relief from the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe. People across the territory continue to struggle to meet their basic needs as Israel's ongoing violations of international law severely obstruct the humanitarian scale-up.

Mali: 200,000 children at risk of dying of hunger

A combination of protracted armed conflict, internal displacement, and restricted humanitarian access risks pushing nearly one million children under the age of five in Mali into acute malnutrition by December 2023 – with at least 200,000 at risk of dying of hunger if life-saving aid fails to reach them, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned in a joined statement Friday.

UN: Risk of genocide in Sudan real and growing

The United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide warned on Tuesday that Sudan is showing all the signs of risk of genocide, and that it may have already occurred. Alice Wairimu Nderitu spoke at a UN Security Council meeting to mark the 25th anniversary of a resolution on the protection of civilians in armed conflict and the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, the cornerstone of international humanitarian law.

More than 216,000 people forcibly returned to Haiti despite worsening crisis

The UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that more than 216,000 people were forcibly returned to Haiti in 2023, despite the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis, and despite repeated calls that Haitians should not be forcibly returned to the Caribbean nation. According to an IOM report released Monday, most of the Haitians were returned from the neighboring Dominican Republic - 96 percent - but also from the United States, Cuba, the Bahamas, Turkey, and Jamaica as well as Turks and Caicos.

Donors pledge 1.5 billion amid catastrophic situation in parts of Sudan

The international community pledged $1.5 billion Monday toward tackling the massive humanitarian crisis in Sudan, as fighting between forces led by rival generals has only been punctuated by brief truces and no political solution appears close at hand. Meanwhile, the lasted 72-hour truce in Sudan that came into force Sunday morning seems to be holding, at least in the capital Khartoum.

Lebanon: Extensive damage reported after Israeli airstrikes target southern Beirut

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Monday that it remains gravely concerned about the impact of ongoing military activities in Lebanon on civilians. These concerns include the aftermath of Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs late Thursday, just before the start of the Islamic holiday Eid al-Adha. Additional strikes were recorded in the southern village of Ain Qana that same night.

Sahel: WFP funding crisis leaves millions stranded without emergency aid

Funding constraints mean that the World Food Programme (WFP) has been forced to limit emergency aid to only 6.2 million of the most vulnerable people in need across West Africa, scaling back from an initial target of assisting 11.6 million, the United Nations agency said on Wednesday. Millions in the Sahel will be stranded without aid as the lean season sets in and hunger starts to peak.

DR Congo: Massive displacement of civilians continues in North Kivu province

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the massive displacement of civilians continues in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, DR Congo) following recent clashes between armed groups.  Since October 1, more than 145,000 people have fled the violence in Masisi and Rutshuru territories in North Kivu province, amid reports of pervasive human rights abuses.

DR Congo: The world's most neglected displacement crisis

The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was the most neglected displacement crisis in the world in 2021, according to a report by the non-governmental organization Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). The analysis, released June 1, lists the top ten least noticed displacement crises in the world in 2021.

IRC: Emergencies in Sudan, Occupied Palestinian Territory and South Sudan top Watchlist 2024

The humanitarian organization International Rescue Committee (IRC) has released its annual Emergency Watchlist Thursday, highlighting the 20 countries most at risk of deteriorating humanitarian crises in 2024.  This year, Sudan, Occupied Palestinian Territory and South Sudan top the list of humanitarian emergencies, as conflict, climate risk, economic pressures, growing impunity, and waning international support fuel new and ongoing humanitarian crises around the globe.

Sudan: Air strikes in North Darfur kill scores of civilians

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker TĂĽrk, on Wednesday expressed shock at reports that as many as hundreds of civilians were killed and many others injured in air strikes by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on a crowded market in Tora village, Sudan's North Darfur State, on Monday. There are conflicting reports on the number of casualties, ranging from several dozen to hundreds.

Sudan: Paramilitary forces attack Darfur town of El Fasher, heavy fighting reported

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has expressed grave concern at the outbreak of heavy clashes in the town of El Fasher, despite repeated calls for the warring parties to refrain from attacking the town. Since Friday, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have launched fresh attacks on the North Darfur provincial capital. Nkweta-Salami said in a statement Saturday that the violence threatens the lives of more than 800,000 civilians living in El Fasher.

UN aid chief: Sudan's rival military leaders must commit to save delivery of humanitarian relief

The United Nations humanitarian chief is calling on Sudan's rival military leaders to publicly commit themselves to the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance to millions of people struggling to survive amid escalating fighting. At the end of a visit to the region, Martin Griffiths, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, said Wednesday the Sudanese people face a humanitarian catastrophe.

Nearly 7 million internally displaced in DR Congo

The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) says it is intensifying its efforts to address the complex and persistent humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, DR Congo) as the number of internally displaced people climbs to 6.95 million people across the country – the highest number recorded yet. Meanwhile, the massive displacement of civilians continues in the eastern DRC, following ongoing clashes between armed groups and the Congolese armed forces, leading to soaring humanitarian needs.
