Mozambique: Attacks by armed groups in Cabo Delgado force over 50,000 people to flee

According to reports from the humanitarian office of the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 50,000 people have been forced to flee in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province following escalating attacks by non-state armed groups (NSAGs) and heightened fear of violence. The province is the epicenter of an ongoing armed conflict, and internal displacement is prevalent.

Sudan war: Hostilities in Kordofan and Darfur escalate as cholera spreads across the country

While civilians are being targeted or indiscriminately attacked in several regions of Sudan, with hundreds reportedly killed, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warns that Sudan's humanitarian crisis continues to intensify as cholera spreads throughout the country, flooding displaces communities, and thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) return to areas with little to no support.

Somalia: No famine declared despite catastrophic conditions

The latest acute food insecurity report (IPC report) on Somalia issued Tuesday finds famine in that country has been narrowly averted for now due to the response efforts of humanitarian organizations and local communities to the crisis. While famine has not been officially declared in Somalia, the United Nations (UN) says the underlying crisis however has not improved and even more appalling outcomes are only temporarily averted.

The emphasis of its work is also on helping children at risk. Gaza: Dozens killed, hundreds injured as Israeli forces shoot civilians trying to access food

The United Nations humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, said in a statement on Wednesday that the world is watching horrifying scenes day after day of Palestinians being shot, wounded, or killed in the Gaza Strip simply for trying to eat. The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has recorded the deaths of at least 82 Palestinians and the injuries of at least 506 others, reportedly while they were trying to reach food distribution points in Rafah and Deir al Balah.

Afghanistan: Devastating earthquake strikes Nangarhar Province, killing over 800 and injuring at least 2,800

A devastating earthquake hit Nangarhar Province in Afghanistan on Sunday, near the Pakistan border. The 6.0-magnitude quake, whose epicenter was located in Kama district, caused widespread destruction and loss of life. According to preliminary reports, at least 800 people have been killed and more than 2,800 injured across four provinces: Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, and Nuristan.

South Sudan: Renewed conflict in Jonglei State displaces over 100,000 people

Amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, renewed conflict and airstrikes in Jonglei State have forced over 100,000 people to flee, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The majority of those displaced are women, children, and older people. The insecurity has also led several humanitarian organizations to relocate their staff, disrupting essential activities.

UNHCR warns of surging needs in Sudan

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned today of spiraling humanitarian needs for refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) in Sudan as living costs soar due to the impact of the war in Ukraine, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and extreme weather conditions resulting from the climate crisis. Sudan hosts among the largest number of displaced people on the African continent, including over 1.1 million refugees – mostly from South Sudan – and 3.7 million internally displaced Sudanese, mainly in Darfur and Kordofan.

Volume of supplies entering Gaza vastly insufficient for starving population

Despite the tactical pauses that Israel introduced last week to allow some safe passage for humanitarian convoys, the amount of aid that has entered the Gaza Strip remains vastly insufficient for its starving population. United Nations aid trucks continue to face impediments on their way to deliver aid, while UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) continue to face obstructions that prevent them from bringing in and distributing aid at scale.

Sudan: Four months of conflict take disastrous toll on lives of millions

Four months into the war in Sudan, humanitarian leaders are highlighting the devastating impact the brutal conflict has had on millions of people whose lives have been destroyed and whose basic human rights have been violated. In a statement issued Tuesday, they called on the parties to the conflict to end the fighting, protect civilians and give humanitarian organizations unfettered access to all people in need in all areas of the country.

Somalia: Aid agencies appeal for $852 million amid severe drought

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners, along with the Somali government, launched the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan (HNRP) on Monday to support millions of people across Somalia this year. The launch comes at an unprecedented time for the country, as funding shortfalls are squeezing humanitarian programs while the country is facing a severe drought.

Gaza: Aid blocked for four weeks, UN relief chief urges action to protect civilians

United Nations relief chief Tom Fletcher on Friday again called on the international community to protect civilians in Gaza and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, in accordance with international law, as Israeli attacks on civilians, aid workers, UN personnel, hospitals and ambulances continue with impunity. The complete blockade of humanitarian aid and commercial goods into Gaza, imposed by Israel four weeks ago, remains in place.

Ethiopia crisis: Donors pledge $610 million, while $3 billion are needed

Donors committed US$610.1 million to humanitarian operations in Ethiopia at a high-level pledging event on Tuesday, but fell short of the target. One billion US dollars is needed to fund the immediate response and ensure a pipeline of aid for the next five months. But before the conference, the situation was much worse, as the country's UN-backed $3.24 billion Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) for 2024 was less than 5 percent funded.

Save the Children International

Save the Children is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that campaigns for the human rights and protection of children and provides emergency humanitarian aid for children worldwide. The NGO was founded in the UK in 1919 by the teacher and social reformer Eglantyne Jebb. Today, Save the Children International consists of 30 country organizations and is active in around 120 countries.  The NGO is one of the most successful and influential aid organizations in the world. Its international headquarters are located in London.

HelpAge International

HelpAge International is a development cooperation and humanitarian aid organization that campaigns for the social, economic and cultural rights of older people. The non-governmental organization (NGO) sees its mission in the fight against age-related poverty and age discrimination. HelpAge International is committed to the needs and rights of the elderly worldwide. The aid organization carries out projects to alleviate human suffering, promote participation and strengthen individual potential. The HelpAge network brings together 127 independent organizations in over 77 countries.

Humanity & Inclusion (HI)

Humanity & Inclusion (formerly Handicap International) is an international humanitarian non-governmental organization (NGO) working for the universal recognition of the rights of people with disabilities. The NGO aims to help disabled and vulnerable people in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. Humanity & Inclusion was founded in 1982 and has its headquarters in France and Belgium. The NGO is currently active in more than 60 countries worldwide.

Established in 1966, World Vision Australia has grown to become Australia's largest international non-governmental organization (NGO). Founded in 1950, World Vision is an evangelical Christian NGO focused on development cooperation and humanitarian disaster relief. Its work also focuses on helping children at risk. World Vision Australia is the Australian branch of the nonprofit organization. Yemen: UN suspends aid operations in Saada governorate

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has instructed UN agencies, funds and programs to suspend all activities in Yemen's Houthi-controlled Saada governorate for security reasons, his spokesperson said on Monday. The measure follows the recent detention by Houthi rebels of eight more United Nations staff members, including six working in the governorate.

Gaza: UN aid chief urges international community to break cycle of violence

United Nations relief chief Tom Fletcher on Monday called on the international community to defend international humanitarian law (IHL), demand the protection of all civilians and break the cycle of violence in Gaza. Meanwhile, a growing number of legal experts and organizations are concluding that Israeli actions in Gaza and those targeting Palestinians as a group in the territory amount to genocide.
