Gender-based violence in Sudan on the rise as fighting continues

Senior United Nations officials today voiced shock and condemnation at increasing reports of gender-based violence (GBV) in Sudan – including conflict-related sexual violence against internally displaced and refugee women and girls – since clashes erupted in the country in mid-April. Fighting in Sudan has now entered its 12th week, with no end in sight after multiple failed ceasefire attempts.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)

Founded in 1933 with the aim of helping the politically persecuted, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the largest non-governmental organizations (NGO) focusing on the support of refugees worldwide. The NGO provides emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster. The IRC responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive and rebuild their live. Its international headquarters are based in the United States.

Australia for UNHCR

Australia for UNHCR is the United Nations Refugee Agency’s national funding partner for Australia. The non-governmental organization (NGO) is one of ten UNHCR National Fundraising Partners worldwide. The NGO helps refugees and other displaced people by advocating for their protection and raising funds to enable UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced families in need around the world.

Humanitarian crisis in northern Mozambique severely underfunded

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is appealing for $413 million in emergency funding to help more than 1.7 million people in Mozambique cope with climate disasters and an insurgency concentrated in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. The UN estimates that 2.3 million children, women and men in the country will need humanitarian assistance in 2024, most of them in Cabo Delgado and the neighboring provinces of Niassa and Nampula.

Syria crisis: Neglecting the conflict could have further grave consequences

Amid the political stalemate in Syria, United Nations officials on Monday urged the UN Security Council to maintain its focus on the country, stressing that the consequences of neglecting the more than 13-year-old conflict could be grave for both the country and the region. Syria remains one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, with at least 16.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and some 13.6 million people displaced from their homes.

Geneva Conventions

The Geneva Conventions are a series of international treaties that establish the legal framework for the protection of individuals who are not or are no longer taking part in hostilities during armed conflicts. The conventions follow on the first adopted in 1864 in Geneva, Switzerland, and have been revised and expanded over the years. The four Geneva Conventions of 1949 are at the core of International Humanitarian Law.

Guterres: Severe US cuts to global aid will be devastating for vulnerable people

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday warned of information received this week by UN agencies, as well as many humanitarian and development non-governmental organizations (NGOs), about severe cuts to humanitarian and development funding by the United States. The consequences, he said, will be particularly devastating for vulnerable people around the world. The announced radical funding slashes come at a time when global crises are intensifying, with millions of people at risk of hunger, disease and displacement.

Humanitarian Aid

Humanitarian aid (or humanitarian assistance) can be described as an intervention to help people affected by war, armed conflict, persecution, natural disasters and epidemics to meet their basic needs and rights. Humanitarian aid refers to assistance provided to people in crisis situations to alleviate their suffering and ensure their survival, intended to meet the basic needs of individuals and communities.

258 million people needed urgent food assistance in 2022

The number of people experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity and requiring urgent food and livelihood assistance has increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2022, a new report said today.  Over a quarter of a billion people were estimated to face acute hunger last year because of conflict, economic shocks and weather extremes related to the climate crisis, with the Ukraine war contributing to the increase.

Colombia: Ceasefire with ELN comes into force

A landmark truce agreed between the Colombian government and the National Liberation Army (ELN), the largest remaining rebel group in the country, has entered into effect on Thursday. The United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia will monitor and verify the implementation of the bilateral ceasefire agreement between the Government and the ELN rebel group. On Thursday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated both sides “as they embark on a new phase in their peace process.”

USA for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national funding partner for the United States. The organization is one of ten UNHCR National Fundraising Partners worldwide.  Established by concerned American citizens, the nonprofit organization builds support in the United States for the humanitarian work of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). USA for UNHCR’s mission includes informing Americans about the plight of people forced to flee their homes due to violence, conflict and persecution, and advocating for their protection.

UNHCR urges universal accession to Refugee Convention

Sunday marks the 73rd anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, the cornerstone of refugee protection that has saved and protected the lives of millions of people around the world fleeing war, violence, persecution and human rights abuses. To mark the anniversary, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) urged the remaining 46 UN member and observer states that have not yet done so to accede to the Convention.

Children in Need

Millions of children are threatened by humanitarian crises around the world. Many are at the center of wars, armed conflicts, persecution, natural disasters, and other complex crises. Children pay a high price for humanitarian crises. They have often experienced or witnessed acts of violence and are at risk of neglect, violence, abuse, exploitation, human trafficking, or military recruitment. Children's rights are under threat all over the world. 

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organization that assists people who have been forced to flee their homes. Its headquarters are located in Oslo, Norway. The non-governmental organization (NGO) protects and supports displaced people. Founded in 1946, the Norwegian Refugee Council began its relief efforts after the Second World War and is now one of the world's largest NGOs supporting refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).  The NRC's focus is on providing urgent humanitarian aid in the emergency phase of a conflict or natural disaster.

UK for UNHCR

United Kingdom for UNHCR or UK for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national funding partner for the United Kingdom. The non-governmental organization (NGO) is one of ten UNHCR National Fundraising Partners worldwide. The NGO helps refugees and other displaced people by advocating for their protection and raising funds to enable UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced families in need around the world.

Ceasefire agreed in Ethiopia’s Tigray conflict

Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray Peoples' Liberation Front (TPLF) have announced a ceasefire for the conflict in northern Ethiopia after ten days of peace talks in South Africa. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who mediated the talks led by the African Union (AU), broke the news Wednesday in the South African capital of Pretoria. A joint statement said the warring parties “have agreed to silence the guns and end the two years of conflict in northern Ethiopia.”
