A refugee is a person that is compelled to leave his place of habitual residence in order to seek refuge outside his country of origin or nationality due to persecution, war, conflict, violence, severe human rights violations, events seriously disturbing public order, or other reasons that have made it impossible or dangerous for him or her to remain.

A humanitarian crisis (or humanitarian emergency) is an event or series of events that threaten the health, safety, livelihood or well-being of a large group of people. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a United Nations agency tasked with supporting and protecting refugees, displaced persons and stateless people. The short name of the organization is the UN Refugee Agency. The UNHCR was founded on December 14, 1950, by the General Assembly of the United Nations to provide assistance to refugees from the Second World War. The UNHCR began its work on January 1, 1951. Every year, the UN Refugee Agency helps millions of refugees and displaced persons worldwide.

A complex emergency is a – often protracted - situation in which multiple factors, such as war, conflict, displacement, natural disasters or human-made disasters, and other crises, converge to create a multifaceted and challenging humanitarian situation. These emergencies are frequently characterized by a high level of violence, political instability, total or considerable breakdown of governmental authority, social disruption, and economic decline, and can lead to widespread displacement and suffering among affected populations.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian organization dedicated to protecting and assisting victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and emergency. It was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1863 and is one of the best-known and oldest humanitarian organizations in the world. The work of the ICRC is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949, their additional protocols, its statutes - and those of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.  The globally active humanitarian organization has its headquarters in Geneva.

The IRC responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive and rebuild their live. Its international headquarters are based in the United States.

Australia for UNHCR is the United Nations Refugee Agency’s national funding partner for Australia. The non-governmental organization (NGO) is one of ten UNHCR National Fundraising Partners worldwide. The NGO helps refugees and other displaced people by advocating for their protection and raising funds to enable UNHCR to provide humanitarian assistance to displaced families in need around the world.
