International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) was founded in 1933 with the aim of helping politically persecuted people. Today, it is one of the largest non-governmental organizations (NGO) that focuses on supporting refugees worldwide. The NGO provides emergency aid and long-term support for refugees and people who have been displaced by war, persecution or natural disasters. The international headquarters of the organization are located in the United States. The IRC helps people affected by humanitarian crises to survive and rebuild their lives.

Central America: UN launches humanitarian response plans for El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

The United Nations and its partner agencies in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras on Wednesday launched this year's humanitarian response plans to assist 2.2 million people in need, seeking a total of US$306 million. The three countries continue to face violence, food insecurity, extreme weather events and mixed movements of refugees and migrants, with more than 4.6 million people in need of humanitarian aid in 2025.

Situation in Ethiopia spiraling out of control

United Nations Secretary-General AntĂłnio Guterres warns the "situation in Ethiopia is spiraling out of control."  Speaking today to reporters at the United Nations in New York, Mr. Guterres expressed his grave concern about the escalation of the fighting in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, which is having a devastating impact on civilians in what is already a dire humanitarian situation. The UN chief also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

UN: Large-scale human suffering in forgotten crises must be reported

The United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on journalists to ensure that large-scale human suffering in forgotten crises around the world does not go unreported and that “the demands of the people are amplified so that those with the power, influence and the funds hear it to make a difference.” The comments came on the eve of today’s Human Rights Day, as Mr. Türk launched a yearlong campaign to mark the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75 years ago.

World Relief

World Relief is an evangelical Christian humanitarian nongovernmental organization (NGO) based in the United States, also known by its full name World Relief Corporation of National Association of Evangelicals. The faith-based NGO’s mission is to empower local churches to serve the most vulnerable people in the fight against poverty, violence and injustice. The organization was founded in 1944 - in the aftermath of World War II - to respond to the urgent humanitarian needs of war-torn Europe.

Plan International Australia

Plan International is a global organization working to advance children's rights and equality for girls. Plan International Australia is the Australian arm of this organization, focusing on international development and humanitarian projects. Founded in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, Plan International is one of the oldest and largest children's aid organizations in the world. Plan International is active in more than 75 countries. The charity responds to emergencies and disasters that threaten the lives of children.

Yemen at risk of being dragged further into the Middle East conflict

Amid rising regional tensions and a worsening humanitarian situation, all actors must put the interests of the Yemeni people first in order to restore peace and stability in the country, Hans Grundberg, the UN envoy for Yemen, told the UN Security Council on Tuesday. Grundberg warned that as the military escalation in the Middle East intensifies, Yemen risks being dragged further into it.

Refugees

A refugee is a person that is compelled to leave his place of habitual residence in order to seek refuge outside his country of origin or nationality due to persecution, war, conflict, violence, severe human rights violations, events seriously disturbing public order, or other reasons that have made it impossible or dangerous for him or her to remain.

Tearfund

Tearfund is an evangelical Christian aid organization based in the UK that works with churches in more than 50 of the world's poorest countries. The name "Tearfund" is an acronym derived from "The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund". The charity, which was founded in the UK in 1968 to help people affected by the war in Biafra, focuses primarily on supporting people living in poverty and providing disaster relief to disadvantaged people. Tearfund works primarily through local Christian churches and other Christian partner organizations around the world.

INTERSOS

Founded in Italy in 1992, INTERSOS is an international humanitarian organization that focuses on providing humanitarian assistance to people affected by war, violence, extreme poverty, and natural or human-made disasters. The main areas of work of the non-governmental organization (NGO) include emergency response, health care, protection, education and livelihoods.

Ethiopia: WFP resumes food distributions to refugees as IDPs miss out

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has begun rolling out food distributions to nearly 900,000 refugees in Ethiopia, following a full revamp of the safeguards and controls in its refugee operations. WFP said Monday that families living in refugee camps across five regions are receiving food parcels for the first time since the UN agency paused food distributions in June 2023, following reports of large-scale diversions.

Ethiopia crisis: Donors pledge $610 million, while $3 billion are needed

Donors committed US$610.1 million to humanitarian operations in Ethiopia at a high-level pledging event on Tuesday, but fell short of the target. One billion US dollars is needed to fund the immediate response and ensure a pipeline of aid for the next five months. But before the conference, the situation was much worse, as the country's UN-backed $3.24 billion Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) for 2024 was less than 5 percent funded.

German Parliament approves one billion to tackle global food crisis

The Bundestag, the national parliament of Germany, has approved additional spending of one billion euros to tackle the global food crisis in the coming year. After more than 17 hours of deliberations, the Budget Committee of the Bundestag adopted the federal budget for 2023 early Friday morning.

Fighting continues in Ethiopia’s northern regions

In Ethiopia, hostilities continue in the northern part of the country, with reports of new displacement of civilians and increased humanitarian needs, the United Nations (UN) said today in a briefing. While the situation in the northern regions of Afar, Tigray and Amhara remains tense, the UN and its partner organizations continue to provide humanitarian aid to the affected people where security allows.

WFP: World at risk of another year of record hunger

The world is at risk of yet another year of record hunger as the global food crisis continues to drive yet more people into worsening levels of acute food insecurity, warns the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).  In a statement this week, to mark today’s World Food Day, the UN agency called for urgent action to address the root causes of the hunger crisis.

Eastern DR Congo: Conflict-impacted people urgently need more international assistance

Those impacted by the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, DR Congo) need much more international assistance than they are currently receiving, the United Nations' top aid official said on Thursday. Speaking from the Goma region, whose main city was overrun by Rwanda-backed rebels from the Mouvement du 23 mars (M23) in January, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher explained that people have suffered "decades of trauma."

South Sudan: Key electoral questions remain unanswered amidst grim humanitarian situation

While South Sudan anticipates holding its first elections in December 2024, key institutions and legal frameworks are yet to be established, and critical questions remain unanswered, the top United Nations official for the country told the UN Security Council Friday. At the briefing, speakers warned that intercommunal violence and a massive influx of returnees and refugees continue to worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in the country.

Number of unaccompanied children crossing Central Mediterranean Sea increases by 60 percent

More than 11,600 children crossed the Central Mediterranean Sea to Italy without their parents or legal guardians between January and mid-September 2023, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reports. This is an increase of 60 percent compared to the same period last year, where around 7,200 unaccompanied or separated children made the perilous crossing, UNICEF said in a statement on Friday.

DR Congo: EU gravely concerned by deteriorating humanitarian situation

The European Union (EU) says it is gravely concerned by the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo, DRC), which recently led to an immediate system-wide scale-up by the United Nations of humanitarian operations in the eastern part of the country. In a statement Friday by its High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, the EU also expressed outrage at the levels of violence and atrocities that continue to be perpetrated by armed groups with impunity against civilians.
